To celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Star Wars universe, Lucasfilm has adopted a new packaging style for all high-end collector product, which includes Sideshow’s 12-inch figure and Premium Format lines. Beginning with the 1:6 scale Jabba the Hutt package, Sideshow’s packaging will reflect Lucasfilm’s vision of classic-yet-contemporary grey on black design, inspired by Darth Vader’s chamber.
Our challenge at Sideshow was to apply the new style to our existing 12-inch figure box design while presenting fans with familiar Sideshow elements such as plenty of well-researched descriptive text, movie stills, and product photography. After consultation with Lucasfilm and several rounds of design concepts, the final approved design was laid out. The final 30th Anniversary Star Wars 12-inch figure packaging retains the popular collector-friendly double window design of the 2006 box, which has been wrapped with the new, elegant artwork. We hope you enjoy the new Star Wars packaging as much as we do.

I’m sorry but I hate hate HATE this new design.
they look good to me, but i’m not a SW collector and can’t compare them to other boxes. but i do notice a 30 yr logo on the new boxes so i’m a little curious about what some poeple mean about needing a logo.
The more I look at these pics, the more excited I get to receive the new figures in their brnd new boxes!
I love the Classic Star Wars Logo. It really does take me back to August, 1977…It captures the same feel as the “Album” soundtrack sleeve from back in the day…very classy and elegantly understated, but still emotes great power…How about a 1/6 Luke Skywalker in Full Bespin Fatigues with Blaster, and Gunbelt? The exclusive version could have a hand stump, and “agonized” expression alternate character head…and he could ship in one of those AWESOME new boxes!
It doesn’t look bad, I just like the old one. Instead of showing us new boxes, why not show us some new figures? The only new one you’ve announced is the MEDICOM Bobba Fett. Will you guys make one of your own or just become the American distributor for Medicom?
I liked the colorful packaging of the old style, however I like the single full figure shots on the front rater than the collage of face shots.
There is so much more to these figures than head sculpts, it nice to have that recognized.
Hopefully after the anniversary you can add the color back but keep the single shot.
i like leia’s new box, especially since i have her ordered. Will there be different boxes for the exclusives, or will they just be different on the inserts. I would like to see figures that are tape free as well, it would be nice to display them without having to destroy part of the packaging. I hated having to cut the base out of the pastic on my kanamit figure, but he had to go on display.
I thought the old design was just fine. This new design seems more Bland to me and breaks up the continuity of the collection as a whole. Why fix something that isn’t broke? Oh yeah, I remember…Han didn’t shoot first!? Thanks George. Forever improving the SW universe yet again! The people suggesting a 30th anniversary graphic added to the existing design are, in my opinion, right on the money. I’d much rather see that. But in the end when I open and display these works of art, I guess it really won’t matter too much.
When is Leia shipping? Is the art for all the figures or just the inclusive? What’s this about a hat too? LOL
okay so now there are two aspects to sideshow collectibles…..one the figure & two the box. i am an opener and actually take the figures out to display, but with sideshow packaging now i not only want to display the figure itself but also the box. dammit my room isnt large enough to do all that showin off……thanks sideshow, thanks a lot……wink wink nudge nudge.
Firstly, I’m sorry that Lucasfilm jumped in and commanded changes when you guys worked so hard on the layout already.
Secondly, I’m very happy that my favorite aspects of all that hard work, i.e., the box construction and the excellent text, are retained!
The new packaging looks glorious, guys! Well done!
It’s a winner, I guess. I like the new design of the boxes, but I did like the old ones better. To me what a collectible comes in is a great part of the collectible itself, so to see the new style is great, but the old style suited my taste more. The 30th Anniversary of star Wars is sure to bring lots of new and wonderful things and this is just a part of it, so I will be anxiously waiting to see what else may be changing, er.. improving. Thanks for the information on the change.
It looks nice, though I really prefer the existing packaging. I hope LFL won’t continue to mandate a line look after the 30th Anniversary.
Well, the only constant in any Universe is change, and it is no surprise about the packaging. I like it, but at the same time, feel that there should have just been a 30th Anniversary graphic made for all high-end collectibles across the board to put in a corner or something.
I also prefered the ORIGINAL packaging style for these figures, now the new ones won’t look half as good next to the older ORIGINAL ones, Maybe you can persuade MR LUCAS to allow you to re-release these next year in the ORIGINAL packaging design, who knows maybe like HASBRO you could get collectors to buy the same thing twice then?
I will miss your colorful package designs SSC. These are ok but not as good as yours.
BOO!! Dark Lord Emperor Lucas strikes back! I know it’s your property and all, but please get over controlling EVERY aspect of Star Wars, George! I mean, down to the packaging?? Talk about your micro manager!! Glad I got Obi Wan and Sith Anakin to behold what great packaging DID look like. Another victory for the Empire.
They look ok i suppose, but thought the previous design was much better. Trust Lucasfilm to screw things up… again.
A 30th Anniversary symbol in a bottom corner would have sufficed. Having the boxes in hand may sway my opinion though. (That’s a polite way of saying ‘Hurry up’)
Top notch, Sideshow. As a graphic designer, I know what it’s like to have to retool the look of something that looked pretty dang good before it even came to me. So hats off to your people.
Sideshow do you have a Sideshow anonymous program because I have an addiction and I need to talk with someone about it.
LOL
AWSOME new design! Marc, I also had to re-order the Plo Koon after seeing this sweet packaging. Please let my waitlist pull through!
Looks awesome, I won’t want to remove my figures from the package now. Keep up the good work.
very cool. they look great…can we have them now???
Looks nice, too bad the ‘trim’ is gone.
This doesn’t have to do with the outside packaging, but I’d like to see something like Medicom does with the inner trays [on all figures]. They have no tape on them, but the corners have indents which hold the lid on VERY securely, almost a little hard to get off. Much nicer than the tape, plus it stays on. So please Sideshow?
WOw. I think they look great. It really highlights the characters… Plus, seeing Plo Koon’s new box got me to reorder his cancelled butt!
