More information about our Dejarik Holochess Set!

CLICK HEREWe have been fielding a lot of inquiries about the nature of our new Dejarik Holochess Set at Toy Fair, which will be Priority Pre-Ordering at 10 AM (PST) on Friday, February 16th. [Click Here for PPO Info] We think that the following look behind-the-scenes at the production of this imaginative expansion pack will help answer some of those questions:

The Dejarik Holochess Set kicks off the beginning of our Star Wars 30th Anniversary Celebration. We wanted to do something fresh and unique, and our creative team has a real soft spot for the cool Dejarik creature designs. It’s a fun product; a very nice little stand-alone set that just happens to be scaled perfectly for our 12-inch figure line. Plus, it’s very versatile, and you will be able to display it in several ways, either on its own or with any of our 12-inch figures who might want to play a quick game of inter-galactic chess!

We originally designed the Holochess Set as a plastic product, possibly using clear plastic for the creatures. After exploring a lot of options in plastic, we determined that it would be almost impossible to control the casting of the creatures, due to their small sizes, and it would be unlikely that they could stand up on their own. We decided plastic wasn’t a good option, and instead, upgraded the piece to a solid polystone table with white metal (pewter) creatures. It will make for a nicer, quality set, and the creatures should stand on their own with no problem. Because the figures are metal, it is not possible to make them clear. In order to keep the price within the range of the rest of our Star Wars 1:6 scale line, there is no light-up feature in the product.

We invite you to take a closer look at the image gallery for this new expansion pack for our Star Wars 12-inch figures. Don’t forget that the Sideshow Exclusive edition, limited to only 1,250 pieces worldwide, will begin Priority Pre-Ordering on Friday, February 16th, at 10 AM (PST) – so make sure you are qualified by then! 1. Puay says:

I am really please knowing that new materials are being introduced to the 12″ line. But a little concern. The table being made of polystone, would it break easily when dropped.

  2. Gosszilla says:

I am a bit dissapointed. Not entirely in Sideshow, but why couldn’t these figure be offered in true scale? I’d prefer a plieable rubber material covering a metal framework. Hasbro should have made these available at least as hard translucent plastic, A Long Time Ago…

  3. Cherie says:

I am really digging this piece, but unfortunatley I have to work Friday, so I will try to get on the wait list asap if I do end up wanting to purchase one….

  4. Keith says:

I’m waiting for a 12″ Vader. Also, if you are reading this Sideshow, since you are doing diaramas and environments in polystone, please consider casting the Jedi Temple. This could be done like the environments in Lord of the rings series. I think the Jedi Temple would look cool and sell well.

  5. mudshark says:

I’m looking at this as a kind of appetizer for the feast that’s on the way. It’s a tasty treat by itself and it’s a delightful prelude to the meal yet to come, but unlike with food, it will still be here to relish when everything else has been served… IF you’ve gone ahead and ordered one, that is.
My appetite’s all set for Friday morning!

  6. JediTray says:

The price of this is going to be the deciding factor for me. I don’t like expansion packs that will be as much if not more than the figures they accompany. Please keep things affordable, SS.

  7. The Wilson says:

Since the pieces cannot be cast out of clear plastic, please consider making the colors lighter on a few of the pieces to give it more of a holographic feel, rather than just miniature creatures walking around on a table. This will make the difference whether I buy it or not.

  8. Sachiel says:

SSC, you guys shouldn’t hold back! Go all out! This is Star Wars!

  9. rowie says:

    From thejawa.com:
“In regards to the expansion sets, many people wondered if the Dejarik Chess Table set would signal a Chewbacca, C-3PO, or R2-D2 figure. There are actually no plans to do any of those figures, certainly not this year and not in the near future.”

No Chewie,Threepio or R2……..So whats the point?

  10. darthviper107 says:

I wasn’t going to get this, but I will try for it on Friday. Especially if the annoucement today is what I’d like.

  11. Craig Flanagan says:

I know it would be a complete waste of time, but if the holochess set came with “instructions” on how to play that would be cool.

On the matter of figures to go w/ this set, everyone needs to chill. There’s alot of other stuff going on and when you have tons of popular liscenses, it would be bad business to invest all your time in Star Wars, even if it is the best of the best.

  12. shawn D. says:

Very impressed with the route SS took on this one. I love the main characters, but it is nice to see something like this. I plan on buying a set. Just for the record though, a Lando 12″ would be pretty cool to see in the near future. I can wait on Chewbacca if it means getting the “fur” right. Excellent job SS, as always!

  13. JediNight says:

Expansion pack for the 12-inch figures, not necessarily an expansion for a SPECIFIC figure… that’s what I got out of it anyway. Besides, I’m sure Dejarik was a game played by MANY in the SW galaxy! I’m excited to have Qui-Gon and Maul face off at the chess table! Or Jedi Luke VS Bib Fortuna… LOL! Bring it on…

  14. Skullsplitte. says:

Pretty cool piece. i guess for the time being i’d have to display it with my old Hasbro R2 w/utility arms, 3-PO & Chewie until SS can hopefully hook me up with far superior versions.

  15. JohnyBoo says:

Fantastic, I can remember the first time I saw that scene back in the 70′s thinking “wow how cool is that!” I am so gonna preorder this.

  16. The Earl of Dunfield says:

    Dear SSC,
As always with a bit of explaination I cant totally get behind you! Pewter figures are sweet! While I would have loved translucent, sharp design is way better.
    Rock on.

  17. Quetzal bird says:

Gimme one now! – shoulda been translucent though guys, & if it lit up, well, frankly, I would have paid any price! As others have said before me, well done on the imaginative avenues explored & I hope it is the start of a millenium falcon diarama set ala jabbas palace stylee!!! Good Work Sideshow!!!

  18. CJS says:

Does anybody know how to play Holochess?

  19. Cowtipper says:

I love this piece, but come on Sideshow we need the figures to compliment this piece!! CHEWIE!!! R2 D2!!! C3PO!!! Give us some more love guys!! The detailed pictures I agree are pretty nice!!

  20. wicked_loki says:

Call me gullable or whatever you want, but I am really feeling this piece. Yes, I want our favorite wookie and I would loooove to have him at the same time this gets released, but on the other hand I want him to look like Chewie and not a mop! So Sideshow, know that we are all looking forward to the other pieces for this “EXPANSION SET”. Still I can not wait to add this to my 12″ collection.

P.S. yes translucent creatures would nice, but as cool as they could be, these color monsters will show up better! In this case let me be the one voice who is happy they are not exactly like the movie.

    peace out.

  21. Cocoboloboy says:

I don’t know why but I’ve loved this scene in SW since I was a kid. I always look forward to it when I watch the movie and I look forward to getting this very cool piece as a collectible. Thanks SSC!

  22. joe says:

thank you ss for the detailed pics, i love it, and plan to order if i can get to a computer in time!

  23. JIM says:

I love these little expansion packs. I can’t wait to see what this is an expansion pack of. Any way I know it will be fantastic!

  24. Dave says:

I don’t understand why the creatures could not be molded out of transluscent resin with a magnetic base to hold them on the table. They are holographic pieces and should reflect their appearance in the film. And where’s Chewie? How are we supposed to let the Wookie win?

  25. Kyle W. says:

    Patience!!!You must learn patience.-Yoda
It is the beginning of the 30th anniversary line, so you know that there’s gotta be more to come.

  26. Homer Simpson says:

I would like to know what this is an expansion pack off? Surely if you have an expansion pack, you need something to expand on in the first place? OR am I missing the point?!?!?

  27. Trevor S says:

This really looks good next to han but a wookie next to it would look even better!
