In case you haven’t heard, the new Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series will premiere on the big screen in August 2008! To begin our celebration of this exciting event, we wanted to let you in on some behind-the-scenes design info for our new Obi-Wan Kenobi: General – Clone Wars 12-inch figure.
While the overall design of the figure is inspired by the original animated series, the design team took a real-world approach to this cartoony character. Since the animated series takes place between Episodes II and III, the design and development team gave this youthful Obi-Wan figure the likeness of the real-action character, played by actor Ewan McGregor, but included the hair and costume details of the animated Obi-Wan from the cartoon series.
As a member of the Clone Armies of the Republic, General Kenobi’s costume is largely armored. Thus, this figure also happens to launch the premiere of our newly minted Clone Trooper armor, offering the first peek at Sideshow’s armies of Star Wars figures to come! We believe that General Kenobi, as a much beloved character from the saga, makes a great spokesman for the introduction of this exciting new development in Sideshow’s Star Wars 12-inch figure line! The Clone Trooper armor costume uses an assemblage of hard plastic ABS panels in combination with a cloth undersuit. ABS is favored over softer plastics because it offers a crisper look to the armor panels, and allows for better paint detail and weathering effects. Look for this armor technique in future figures releases, and be sure to place your Obi-Wan Kenobi: General 12-inch figure during the Priority Pre-Order event on on Friday, February 22nd! Click on the images below to see some of our inspiration for the figure, plus casts of the armored pieces of the costume and a look at the undersuit for our Clone Trooper armor. Please Note: When you receive this figure in-hand, do not attempt to removed the armor, as the figure is not meant to be undressed, especially the armored torso, which clasps around the body of the figure. Additionally, the Clone Trooper undersuit will be dark brown for the General Kenobi figure, to depict his look in The Clone Wars.

Looks really good and I’ve ordered one but one thing I did notice is that you put the holo control panel on the right arm. Going from the stills from Clone Wars it should have been on the left. This would allow Obi-Wan to still use his lightsabre and communicate with Rex at the same time. In the video blog on this piece you said that the holo Rex that comes with the exclusive would be able to attach to the glove. If the attach area is on the same side he holds his lightsabre then we won’t be able to pose the figure with lightsabre ignited and talking to Rex which would be (IMO) a really good pose for the piece. Hope I’m wrong SS because this does look like it’s an awsome display piece.
Thanks for the peek inside, Sideshow. However, I am concerned that there is no helmet pictured. He clearly had one in the Clone Wars cartoon, and the Hasbro 3.75″ versions include a helmet as well. I am also, like many others, concerned about the price on this figure. PLEASE keep the price in mind and include a helmet! I guess we’ll find out for sure Friday. Good luck to everyone with their orders!
All I can say is: Well Done SideShow! My only wish is that some sort of helemt be included with the figure; I don’t care if he can wear it or not. I await the price as well.
That has to be one of the best head sculpts I have seen SS do. I have not done any 12 inch figures from SS due to watching what I collect (and waiting for the 12 inch Boba Fett), but this one might have to be ordered! It looks way to cool. I had to buy the Gandalf the Grey becaus ehe was too cool looking ( and my favorite LOTR character).
Good job SS!
I think it will be tough to make a helmet that can fit over the natural head of the figure without making it look like one of those Medicom VCD figures(big-headed). They will have to have a replacement head for figures that are meant to be displayed with or without a helmet.
A great look at the inspiration and formation of a great looking figure. Thanks for sharing with us gang.
This figure will be kick arse good !!! Way to go on first “armor” figure.
Absolutely brilliant, thank you! When SS had their contest to have a fan’s head scanned onto a 12″ figure- THIS is what I was hoping see.
I can’t wait to see what other great figures the Clone Wars and Sidewhow come up with this year (build-a-clone, anyone?). Keep up the great work!
It looks great. My only concern is chest articulation and ankle movement. And range of articulation in general. Thought it does look more poseable than the Medicom. I guess we’ll find that out when the body is shown?
Sideshow thanks for finally making armor. I hope that we will see other armored figures before the end of this year? I hope that this prototype will remain untouched. The best likeness yet!!! And how much longer must we wait for Vader?
I really like the “real world” approach of taking some of the animated features and meshing it with the “real” actor’s likenesses. This looks to be one of my favorite upcoming Star Wars pieces. I’d love to see an inclusive add-on with a jousting lance and a “head swap” clone helmet. If a swoop speeder bike could be added to the mix, that would take it to the next level. Just imagine Obi-Wan on his speeder bike preparing to joust. Regardless, thank you for this piece and
I also look forward to Sideshow sending in the rest of the clones! Once that door opens for the “armored” Army of the Grand Republic, the fans are going to go ga-ga trying to get each type of clone batallion and variant commander. I hope to see an ARC Trooper next! Thanks Sideshow. I love your Star Wars line and also look forward to the Indiana Jones line too.
