Lord of the Rings Sneak Peek…

Here’s a collector question from a recent ‘Ask Sideshow’ submission: It is fantastic to see Sideshow’s new openness and transparency with regard to both your willingness to respond to our questions in the “Ask Sideshow’ segment, as well as the ever increasing amount of “in progress” updates and photo’s you provide. This was most evident on the Saturday night of this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, when you not only provoided updates on new licenses, but you also provided many sneak peeks of future projects in existing licenses such as Marvel, Stars Wars and Indiana Jones. So what was missing? Only the winner of your latest poll : “What new products would you like to see revealed during Comic-Con?” Not only did LOTR narrowly beat out Stars Wars for 1st place in this poll, it destroyed the 3rd place finisher, Marvel. Yet is spite of this surprising [I’m sure for both Sideshow and LOTR collectors alike] result, LOTR fans were treated to exactly ZERO new sneak peeks during SDCC. So please Sideshow, how about throwing LOTR fans a bone here? We too would love to see some sneak peeks of what is to come, and in light of the latest poll results one might argue we deserve it!

You asked for it; you shall receive! We won’t tell you exactly what this is, but we’re sure that you’ll guess! And we will be doing more sneaks for the LOTR line development down the line. Frodo lives!

  1. coup says:

…. morgul gate gargoyle bookends please ….

  2. woodsy says:

Good point! Just as Aragorn and Elessar both deserve the PF treatment, so do GTG and GTW. I know there are a few grumbling this is a rehash of the same character but this to me simply displays a lack of knowledge of the character[s] and/or story. Even Sir Ian McKellan [and he would know!]stated the two were distinct characters, and that he greatly preferred the warmer, easy going GTG to the “stuffier” GTW.

  3. DJ says:

CORRECT. Gandalf the Grey and Gandalf the White are SEPARATE characters. Therefore a GTG PF is fully in order. Just like there is already an Aragorn PF,, someday there will be a King Elessar PF as well…….

  4. woodsy says:

Yes, there is another Gandalf PF, Gandalf the White. But he is not Gandalf the Grey.

  5. Jenn says:

Like GRIMMKNIGHT suggested, it kind of looks like he is before the Doors of Durin…or perhaps the scene inside the mines when he shines his light down the great hall before they become overrun…or the scene right after that when the far side glows red signaling the approach of the Balrog.

  6. Jenn says:

But there already is a Gandalf PF. I don’t think they will do another. I am hoping this one will feature another character(s), as we already have seen him treated to every other line (polystone statue (incl. bronze), bust, LSB, PF, 12″). Therefore I don’t think it would make sense to make a duplicate of him, unless it is in diorama format. But who knows.

  7. jackyll says:

I agree Wtih Jenn “a dio of him in Moria fighting the Balrog on the bridge….”You shall not pass!”

  8. Raymond says:

this is definitely a Gandalf the Grey premium format figure. He looks kinda tall in the picture.

  9. SDJ says:

Boromir! Boromir! Has anyone seen Boromir? Please STOP with the Aragorn and Gandalf merchadise. I believe there were one or two other characters in the movie’s. PF Boromir, Theoden, Gimli and Eomer? Diorama’s? Give me Grond breaking the gates but other than that you have been doing magnificently. LSB’s? A moria orc or Lurtz would be nice but no complaints. Oh, and for God’s sake, bring back the 12″ line with Ringwraith’s, Numenorian soldiers and Elvish warriors and we will all buy multible figures!

  10. DJ says:

Its not amazing at all that LOTR still holds a product demand. That notion is ridiculous. In fact it stands to reason. How many other SOLD OUT products has SS released for how many other licenses from films that came out 25+ yrs ago if not decades ago??? A great example is the movie LEGEND. One movie from 1986 (23 yrs ago), no sequels, no books, no TV shows and look at how well their products have sold! Plus, so many other companies have offered LOTR items but they were quite lame and not even close to the caliber that SS offers, so it is not a wonder why they stopped selling. The only other company that is offering them (that I know of) is United Cutlery, since they are bringing out some pretty cool new stuff for the franchise we havent seen before.

  11. DJ says:

First; Its Gandalf the GREY for sure. GTW did not have that hair style or those those wrist wrappings either; they are both exclusive to the GREY wizard.
Second; The pic doesnt show a sculpted “outfit”; it shows a sculpted wrist wrap and thats all. A small part of the forearms and shoulder are visible and they are bare.
I think its definately a PF, any other collectible WOULD have had an arm with clothing that was sculpted. LOTR fans are WAY overdue for a PF announcement ( last one March 09) and besides, there has already been a GTG dio and LSB- and I really dont think they would release another GTG dio that was so close in theme to the other one (Moria/Balrog) etc.
What I will say is that if this is a PF and is still in final design phase,, PLEASE, PLEASSSEEE make a light-up staff crystal! Fans have been asking for that on a GTG PF since LOTR PFs began being released. Especially if the staff will be held up like the pic shows (as if Gandalf is trying to light his path) a super-bright LED that puts out ALOT of light under and actual jagged crystal shard would produce a totally stunning effect!!  That would certainly make that PF the Grail of all the Fellowship PFs,, hell it would even give the 25 pc Bronze GTG a run for its money :)

  12. Alan says:

Yep as the great Woodsy has just said, this is what it is, Gandalf the Grey PF, thank you very much SS!!!

  13. woodsy says:

Take this to the bank. It is a PF. It is GTG. It is based on the Mines of Moria.

  14. Grimmknight says:

Definitely Gandalf the Grey, because of the Staff…could be looking up at the Runes above the outside entrance of the Mines of Moria…

  15. GRIMMKNIGHT says:

Definitely GANDALF THE GREY…Could be looking up at the Runes outside the Entrance to The Mines Of Moria…

  16. Lemenya says:

    That’s definitely GTW… Helm’s Deep, perhaps?

  17. TheGD says:

That sure looks like the Gandalf the GREY Staff…bumpy, tree like instead of the SMOOTH, SILKY WHITE staff of GTW.

  18. TheGD says:

Perhaps a GTW vs Witching Diorama? Does look eerily like a PF with the space between hair and shoulder, though…but that POSE with him kinda looking UP?

  19. woodsy says:

Awesome SS, you used my question! Looking forward to seeing this diorama in it’s entirety. Could there be an excl.?…..a light up staff perhaps!!

  20. Fritz says:

Agree with Calle and crazytrain for the most part.

  21. try try try not says:

Please…LOTR the Star Wars of this generation? lol Not that LOTR isn’t great, but if you think annual sales of Star Wars merchandise doesn’t far exceed LOTR merch…you must be living in Middle Earth.

  22. Calle says:

I can’t really see if it’s a PF or dio. The sculpted shirt that goes up to the nuckles looks sculpted, but it’s so much space between his shoulder and hair, making it a PF

  23. Chris says:

Sculpted outfit doesn’t mean it’s not a PF. I can’t fathom that anyone would think another Gandalf vs Balrog dio would be a good idea this close to the release of the first (which is still in stock). PLEASE BREATHE SOME LIFE BACK INTO THE PREMIUM FORMAT LINE (Your best line).

  24. crazytrain says:

Why oh why do you keep on trawling out the same characters time after time after time? How many Aragorns have we had? And now another Gandalf?! Unless the image is flipped, or the accuracy is wrong, then this isn’t him fighting the Balrog on the bridge as he held his staff in his left hand then, and I doubt we would see the fight with the Balrog represented again in diorama form.
Some variety with different characters would be really good to see….
However, if this is part of the often requested, much larger “Complete Fellowship at the Tomb of Balin” scene (emphasis on “Complete”), then I AM interested….

  25. Dave Mac (Silsden UK) says:

The light of Arnor dio. GTG poly, so not much chance of it being a PF given the sculpted outfit.
Sam, Merry, Pippin, Boromir, Gimli PF’s next please SSC! :)

  26. Paul says:

Can’t we all just get along.

  27. try try try says:

It’s kind of amazing that these films can still hold so much desire for products. They’re now 8 years old from initial release (6 years from last film), and still capture the imagination. There have been so many LOTR collectibles from so many different companies (let alone Sideshow) and yet it’s astonishing that the demand for more is there. Sorry George Lucas but LOTR, not your sad prequels, is the Star Wars of this generation.

  28. Jenn says:

Or a dio of him in Moria fighting the Balrog on the bridge….”You shall not pass!”

  29. lakeshouse says:

Gandalf the Gray in Mines of Moria with light up stone on his staff
