Comic-Con 2010

The Guardian Predator is an extraordinary piece. I’m thankful to Hot Toys who now prepares the assembly of the Predators line verses putting it together ourselves. I can’t wait to see the rest of the Predators Clan like the Falconer and Tracker with Dog. Go Sideshow! Keep them coming.

You know, there are times when I really don’t envy Sideshow. The biggest complaints surrounding the PF line are the speed at which they are produced, and the lack of a complete fellowship. So what does Sideshow do? They start off the new maquette line with 5 of the first 6 statues being fellowship members and they produce them at a significantly faster pace . That should make people happy right? Wrong. They are accused of rehashing the same old characters that have been done before, and producing them too quickly. LOL

True enough, Sideshow has done Aragorn, Legolas, and Gandalf the Grey in PF [and did a great job on all of them!], but not everyone collects PF’s due to the cost, use of clothing, or space issues. Therefore, it is completely understandable for Sideshow to produce these popular characters in a different scale and medium [pure polystone as opposed to polystone + clothing, etc...

As for these characters being produced when they have been done before in the same scale by another company, well that's just too bad. Sideshow was granted the licensing rights to produce 1/6 scale LOTR statues because they are the best company in the world in regard to producing top quality movie-related collectibles, and they have the right to produce whatever they want.

I for one am thrilled that Sideshow is producing 1/6 scale statues that actually look like the actors who portrayed the roles of Aragorn, Gandalf and Legolas. This isn't a rehash of the same old characters, it's a serious upgrade to the so-so quality of that which has been done before. For all of us that consider ourselves to be true LOTR fans[ and not simply fans of a particular company], this maquette line is the best thing to happen since sliced bread. To the so-called LOTR fans who are only interested in the company logo on the bottom of the statue base, stick with what you’ve got. For those of us whose primary objective is to own the finest LOTR collectibles ever produced, there is another option, Sideshow Collectibles.

DJ, at least one more LOTR PF before the end of this year is a lock. Sideshow, in their Jun.14th Q&A stated as much with this statement: “we hope to unveil the next LOTR PF a little after SDCC” They also stated in that same Q&A that we would “see another Orc at some point” and in their Jul. 4th Q&A edition confirmed we would definitely see a Gollum PF in 2010 or 2011. Now I don’t know for sure which PF is coming first, but I don’t think we’ll have to wait long to find out.

Your points are very valid Shadow. I don’t know of a single PF collector who is happy with the 2/yr speed at which Sideshow’s LOTR PF’s are produced, myself included. And you’re right characters like Boromir and Gimli need to be done, and the sooner the better. All I’m saying is SS seems to be revitalized where their LOTR licence is concerned and it’s nice to see. I realize alot of the emphasis seems to be on the new maquette line, but I also think there’s hope [perhaps a fool's hope on my part] for the PF line. Sideshow has strongly hinted at a Boromir and/or Gimli PF for 2011, and has all but confirmed the very much anticipated Ringwraith on Steed PF for early 2011. I may be wrong, but something tells me the last half of 2010 and right into 2011 will be a heady time for LOTR collectors.

In response to Gumby’s comments,I personally prefer the PF figures,when it comes to LOTR be it the books or movies the complexity and detail of the story and it’s characters deserve to be presented in PF.When I think of the ultimate interpretation or flagship figure to me thats PF.Part of the frustration I expressed in my earlier comments was because from the beginning of the PF line die hard fans have been asking for Saruman,Boromir,Arwen,Theoden,and of course the largely ignored Gimli.These are all main central characters in LOTR not a nameless generic background figure like the recently announced Mordor Orc.The problem most people seem to have with the PF is the fact that at best we get 2 a year and lack of space to display them.I currently own all or have on pre-order all the PF in addition to almost all of the original SIDESHOW/WETA statues and love them all.I also like the new maquettes very much and ordered Aragorn and GTG and no doubt will order Legolas,Arwen,Boromir,and Gimli as soon as they become available,just would have liked to see alot of these characters [ those who are not allready represented ] in the PF format.The new maquette line seems like a win-win for SIDESHOW as they get to improve on some of the original WETA designs and the the maquettes are cheaper and easier to produce compared to the time and resources it takes to make the PF’S.Faster turnaround time,more product,more sales,and for SIDESHOW more profitable.When you consider the price of the new maquettes vs the price of the PF for my money I’ll buy the PF 6 days a week and twice on sunday.SIDESHOW can call the new line anything they want,but for me the FLAGSHIP or ULTIMATE is PREMIUM FORMAT.

As a huge LOTR fan I don’t have any problems with the $225+ cost of these new maquettes. They are so much better [quality-wise] than the previous SSW 1/6 scale statues, and as long as Sideshow continues “nail” these maquettes in the likeness department, plus continue to produce great excl’s then they are worth every penny as far as I’m concerned.

SS…the BSP’s are sweet!! Keep all videos comin’!! Also, Vegasbolts….I was fortunate to land a Surfer as well…it was surprisingly incredible…

Just opened up Silver Surfer and put him on display, wow. Like many of you I have sold everything I have to buy some things this week that SS released, but you have to get this piece it is simply AWESOME.

This Yoda is too pricey for me – I’m happy with the 1:6 scale Yoda I have.
The Degobah Environ looks great, but it’s too bad it’s a cut-away and not the whole dwelling- maybe two halves that come apart would have been better.

Yes, Partick, the Diablo 3 Barbarian Overthrown is the most awesome pieces. It may not be popular but easily the most quality and awesome pieces. But I doubt SS will make another piece any time soon. They already stated they have no plans for another.

I agree with Jedi Jim all around. pricing is a little outta wack on everything lately. Yoda is a go but no way on the hut…too much. I’d be shocked if the Hut sells out.

I actually would have preferred a light saber, snack bar, or flashlight or all of the above for an exlcusive. Leaving the hut, too much and no room for it. Now bring on the droids or Chewie.

I’m surprised at the lack of GI Joe love this year. No new 12 inch pre-orders and no SDCC exclusive. Hopefully the floodgates will lift soon!

100% agree, hope the T800 statue is the last of those. We have the awesome T800 PF but that was from 2008 and its the only one! WAY overdue in expanding that line,, HT just released the superb 1/6 T-1000,, time to pony up and counter it with a T-1000 PF! Lifetimes are not long enough for years between product releases…..

Definitely Yoda and I hope the 1/6 scale version. I’ve already ordered the Momaw Nadon Exclusive, Cyborg Darth Maul Exclusive, 2 Medicom ROTJ Boba Fetts, and 1 Medicom Jango Fett. Most are being released 4th QTR 2010/1st QTR 2011 time frame. Might have to come up with an excuse as to why daddy has more toys under the tree this year than my only child

So my 5yr old loves to look at the new stuff from SideShow and pays attention when I order stuff. He has been really good as of late so I took him to get a toy, well he has been paying attention alot more than I thought. I buy him a toy and he says “Dad you spent alot more on the predator stuff than the toy you bought me, I deserve more”. How do I argue with that?

I’m a huge terminator fan, but don’t really see the point in this polystone statue, you already nailed it with the PF version, this doesn’t bring anything new, what we really need is a t-1000 PF and a battle damaged t-800, as well as a terminator from the first movie, oh and this will probably not happened, not yet anyway, but bring us a Dutch PF from Predator.

SO glad I ended up cancelling the battle-damaged mark III. I already have that as a life-size bust. So this mark vi is going to be AWESOME for me!!!

Just ordered that ironman BD!!!! It looks so hot especially next to the ironman statue that I ordered as well. Damn I’m up to 7 orders now. And we still have a half of month left!!!!! I’m going crazy!!!! Lol.

Wow…there is so much “eye-candy” during Comic-Con. I’m actually glad it’s almost over. My wallet and patience can not take much more of these new products every day.

If SS did NOT mention Hot Toys on the teaser picture, that jacket could ALMOST pass for General Hawks jacket from Gi-Joe. It has too many zippers. Well we have Cobra Commander, so why not General Hawk?

Nicely done WWII piece…very realistic!! Won’t be ordering it, but the work done on it is extraordinary…if you were to do a WWII diorama of soldiers fighting, etc,. that would probably be even more compelling than three stand alone PF soldiers, but hey, the statue does look great!!

Great job with the Star Wars Fett bunch. I also like the WWII figure even though I’m not into that time period. I’m simply waiting for my Gi-Joe figure to pop up. I really think most SS customers are waiting for Gi-Joe. SS if you don’t believe me, then read the comments below. Please release a nice 12″ for us.

Just a quick note on the Berserker, it doesnt look like his dreds are long enough. Theres a scene in the film where we see him walking from behind and his dreds are almost to his waiste.

Hey, Brian, the unaffordable statues that do nothing are so very well done, and appeal to certain collectors with apparently large homes and no families, they say. I don’t know about that.
I would collect some of them if I had the extra money, space for all of them,and no kids or wife to consider in the grand scheme.
That being said, I’m totally with you on the outcry of “We want 12″ figures” since that is something that Sideshow has always done fantastically, all the way back to Holy Grail, Young Frankenstein and Platoon, etc.
12″ is such a popular and universal scale (think of how well Hot Toys, Enterbay and other groups have done focusing on that) that if SSC could expand their presence into the international markets and rule the US market with a polystone fist, they could make a killing by focusing more on what they’re best at, 12″ figures, which are way more fun, affordable and space-friendly than other things, overall.
With the licenses for the biggies like Star Wars, Indy, and Lord of the Rings, it’s actually suprising they’re not doing even more with the 12″ stuff.
Sure, a premium format must bring in more money for less investment, but 12″ stuff is still popular and the most fun, assuming a line is actually supported with consistent releases to keep collecting interest going, and character choices are made wisely, and final products look decent as the pre-order prototype images.
So hurray for the unaffordable statues that do nothing, and thunderous stadium applause for 12″ figures!!! (at least the ones that are done well.)

Ok guys, I just placed my order for SHE-HULK EXCL. It was the BOOBS that one me over and they did a great job on her face scuplt. Only issue is, I guess this one guys to my office, the old lady is going to be mad! LOL

Not sure if I should get excited about the 12″ Medicom releases. Their products are either outrageously cool or somehow lame and plasticky, very hit and miss.

Wow…This Cyborg Darth Maul is one of the best premium formats I’ve ever seen. I pre-ordered the exclusive, because I know it will be as popular or even more popular than the original Darth Maul PF. It is also is a huge figure.

We really need more of what Sideshow does best and the world collects most, 12″ figures!
So happy to have my Hammerhead pre-ordered.
Momaw Nadon was just something made up years back, probably be West End Games when they needed a “Spacey” sounding name.
For example, “Pruneface” Orrimarko (or however you spell it) was just made up by some staff guy after a friend named Orin Marko.(sp?) That’s all. No Lucasfilm backstory, etc. And Yakface’s modern fake-name bears a striking resemblance to an area of Canada, probably where a toy company employee’s grandmother was from in the mid-1990s.
Instead of these arbitrarily created “outer space names” by fellow nerds in high places at toy and game companies over the years, I personally prefer the classic names, which are just as legit, despite their obvious simplicity.
Everyone who loved their Hammerhead action figure growing up in the 70s and 80s had no idea what Momaw Nadon was. It was Hammerhead, and that’s how we liked it, dadgummit!
And we walked to school uphill both ways!

So, yeah, aside from my ranting tangent, bring on more Sideshow and Hot Toys 12″ awesomeness!!

My wife ‘gave’ me one room in our house for my comics, action figures, and statues; but over the past year it’s spilled over into two rooms. For the most part she’s cool with it.

It may be the predator. Just because they say it’s a 12″ figure doesn’t mean it’s exactly 12″ tall. It’s usually just another way of saying 1/6th scale figure.

Plus the predators where small in the film so there might do them in the scale of 12inches inseed of 14inches? Or it might be assiassin creed hot toy?

That’s a whole lot of grousing about “what about my favorite license??” and such. (I’m just as guilty for personally bellyaching for a long time about no more 12″ LOTR because of “waning interest” in the license but then seeing regular, more lucrative LOTR stuff produced all along. Majorly no fun. My 12″ Gandalf is weeping as I type this, but Sam and Frodo are being strong about it.)
Anyway, I have a feeling that some really amazing stuff is going to show up as we get closer to Comic Con. It makes sense to spread out the coolness and save some of the really coolest stuff as a finale to the online event.

Just saw the new Black Cat statue and as much as I love her, they are overdoing the amount of statues for her. They have the large bust coming out, Bowen has a statue out and now this one? Yeah, looking at the hand/arm from what we can see it looks like it very well could be Kratos swinging one of his chain swords. And it does appear to be an art print, the background and actual person are too well matched and integrated for it to be anything else.

Whatever it does end up being, looks like it will be cool!

Nope, definitely Star Wars’ Hammerhead. (I checked against the most recent Hasbro 3-3/4 release’s belt and pouch and it’s right on.)
I suspect the figure is the 12″ we’ve heard about, and that the image next to him might be a polystone Cantina booth for him and his pals?
