Kurt Gardner, Congrats I liked your poem, enjoy the statue! Yes, Sideshow is most gracious giving items away. Maybe next time I enter just a few words and get lucky.
This movie is a legend!
Sorry it took me a couple of days to sit down and write, but I want to say a very sincere THANK YOU to the staff at Sideshow for choosing my poem to win the King of the Dead statue! He’ll be a very special addition to my LOTR collection. I’m happy to win the statue, but even more happy and honored that you enjoyed my poem! Congratulations to all of the other winners and thanks to all of the participants! I really enjoyed reading everyone’s entries! I love the LOTR line Sideshow! Keep up the great work! You all ROCK!! Thanks again.
Great job by all of you, These were great to read.Lots of talent here but don’t get discouraged.Do you know of any company that does anything like this? Sideshow rocks with so many contests/giveaways! When you least expect it you will win, just keep trying.
Congrats to the winners on some cool prizes (I didn’t enter since I have all of the items already!).
Hey Guys, they pretty much do every contest this same way. They pick the best entries for winners and then to a random drawing for the rest. No need to cry about it because the next one will be the same way and in that one you may just be one of the “random” winners. I have entered a ton of contests that I didn’t win anything.. just the way it is. Just be happy you have a company willing to give away so dang much for free… I don’t see anyone else doing this. Win or lose I am still grateful for the chance at least.
Not to cry over spilt Milk, but you were right Kookie. Ok, no pun intended.
A waste of my time and effort. This discourages people from particpating in future contests. Anyone who posts a word or two, gets a prize. Pick honorable mentions not out of a hat. Congrats to the poets who won the statues!
Woot! I’m a poet and didn’t know it, um… I mean I can make a rhyme very time. Um, well, anyway, thanks so much Sideshow, hard to believe with all of the great odes that mine was chosen. I am so very humbled and yet so very proud all at the same time. Congratulations to all of the other winners too, great prizes for everyone there. At least y’all know when I say that you rock, it’s not just fluffin’ yer feathers, it is a sentiment wich I convey quite often. Rock on friends, rock on!
If I had a hammer… I’d hammer in the morning. Oh wait, I do have a hammer now. I have a hammer… and I’ll hammer in the morning. Thanks Sideshow.
My bad
Remember, only the 2 statues went to the Grand Prize winners. The helms and Cave Troll hammers were awarded randomly (name drawn out of hat… seriously - a Sideshow hat at that!) to encourage participation
It’s sad that people can write 1 line and win yet I write something that actually took some thought and won nothing.
Thanks Sideshow!
Dusty Rules!!
Have no fear - the time for our news posts is Eastern Time (3 hours ahead of Pacific Time), so everyone who posted before the timestamp of 3:00 AM on October 25th is qualified! We apologize for the confusion - darn these time zones
Mistress:
I have the same problem as James E. I submitted mine at 11:20pm CST on the 24th, yet it is showing 12:20am on the 25th. It is apparently showing as EST instead of PST. So please don’t disqualify us! We submitted well before the deadline…
There once was a hobbit named Baggins,
who trekked there and back to meet dragons.
One thirteenth the treasure
was wealth beyond measure.
(Though he’d rather stay home tipping flagons!)
He cared nothing for drawing attention.
Thought Adventure a foolish invention.
A shy little fellow
who preferred his life mellow …
but Adventure had other intentions!
His exploits were many and varied
and often turned out to be harried
Through war, pain and strife
he escaped with his life …
… and no clue just who’s jewelry he carried!
(I realize this rhyme comes too late,
as I submit it long after the date.
But most important of all,
I still had a ball
wringing words from my age-addled pate!)
Thanks SideShow!
Adventure was, to our dear hobbits,
Shamed and frowned upon.
They else prefered to farm and smoke
And eat food day long.
Until, surprise, a chap named Baggins
Left his home one night
And set out with a dozen Dwarves
To climb the firey height.
Some seventy years ago this day,
Bilbo left the Shire
And entered into children’s hearts
Young and old desire.
He battled trolls and met fair elves,
Found the ring of power.
He braved Mirkwood’s giant spiders and
An Elf King that hour
Ere he came to the Lake Town of Men
‘Neath the Lonely Mount.
Where would we be, O Bilbo, without
Your brave deeds to count?
You passed on your ‘venturous spirit
To all who listen close,
Namely one young hobbit, Frodo Baggins,
Took another dose
Of hobbit courage and bravery
That destroyed the Eye,
Which saved the Shire and Rivendell
And air where eagles fly.
And preserved the work of Bilbo
So that one day he
May pass along his epic tales
For us all to see.
Men can read the tales of hobbits
In Middle-Earth of old
And thank our favorite hobbit Bilbo
That The Hobbit can be sold.
I have a question; why does my post say 12:19 AM 9/25 when I submitted it at 11:19 CST? Wouldn’t that make it 9:19 PM PST?
Bilbo, Bilbo, Bilbo Baggins,
You stole a ring and beat a dragon.
On Thorin’s map, the treasure you honed,
and came out of the lair with the Arkenstone.
You fought some goblins and ran from a wolf,
but you were saved by dear Gandalf.
The future ahead did shine and glow,
for you helped raise dear young Frodo.
He took the ring with a strong desire,
and then went off to save the Shire.
He sent the ring from whence it came,
and never once gave you the blame.
And then you sailed off, all together,
yet you’ll be remembered for forever.
Happy Birthday, Bilbo!
O’er a century before, Smaug chased Durin’s folk
from Erebor
The dwarves, with an eye on the Arkenstone
appeared at Bilbo’s door
Mithrandir awoke the stalwart spirit
Most hobytla so detest
And he went away adventuring although
“not properly dressed”
A ring he found in an unlikely place, a prize he claimed,
for winning riddles in the dark
As he crept away “Tricksy hobbit, A thief he is”
Was Gollum’s only remark
He bested the spiders in Mirkwood
And his stature seemed to grow
They escaped the Silvan elves
In barrels they did go
He parleyed with the dragon
and found the vulnerable spot
And Bard the owman killed him
With keen sight and a single shot
And finally
their differences aside
the five armies were victorious
though Thorin fell with his nephews at his side
60 years after Bilbo returned home
He wanted to adventure some more
He slipped the ring upon his finger, and disappeared thinking
“who knows where you’ll be swept off to when you step outside your door”
Oh to Bilbo, I must say
the adventure you started
is still, surely, still underway.
If Gandalf knew and I think he must,
of the throng of followers you brought along;
noises in the dark were not your sneezes from the dust,
but gasps and stifled shrieks from under sacred blankey squeeked our song.
To think this day, with the elves ye be;
oe’r to the Western shores of haven waiting for me.
But, oh to my guide, now that you have shown way,
what a new adventure lies out the door each day.
I’ll be along in the course of time,
lessons I’ve learned, a few just to rhyme;
but the others coming with me (oh I hope somebody knows)
are just the beginning of the tide as it flows.
Ode to a Thief …
Birthday?
Bagginses?
THIEF!!!
What did it have in it’s pocketses?
RUIN! My precious… but we guesses too late.
Wretched we were, Precious, but happy then, yesss. Not fair the riddle that stole the
Precious away!
Made us even more miserable than before, tortured by HIM, horrid biting elveses, and slaving to another thief Baggins to fire and death. Should have twisted and ground filthy hobbit into the dust when we had the chance, Precious – instead of playing silly gameses — gameses that killed usss!
gollum!
This thing all things devours…
Nasty hobbit only guessed, and TIME wasn’t the answer, Precious, no — but we knows now the answer was BAGGINSES!
Bless us My Precious! It cheats us out of our birthday present and of our liveses all those years ago.
Cursed BAGGINS! — even in Death, we Hates it … HATES IT … FOREVER!
gollum!
Hmmf, An ode to Bilbo, huh?
His warning took flight with nature’s grace…
His grace took flight without warning!
Penetrating my armour with fury’s pace.
An ode to Bilbo!
For many years I lie in grief…
Prone and extinguished,
Deceived by a thief!
An ode to Bilbo!
For seventy years they’ve mocked my grief,
“All hail the ‘Magnificant!’
All locked up, shy lock and key!”
An ode to Bilbo!
May his legend never cease,
For soon my tomb will dry and I’ll take flight with ease!
So, children of Dale, I asks only this…
Continue his tales with voices loud and merry!
So that I may listen and follow, and return with fire and fury!
Dear Bilbo,
Thanks for making me learn English.
Thanks for leading me out of the hood,
And onto a path to a career in translation.
Thanks for my livelihood.
And thanks for the treasures.
Thanks for the treasures of Tolkien’s word,
Thanks for the treasures in my imagination,
And thanks for the polystone hoard.
Thanks for the collection of incomparable art,
Thanks for the fellowship of wonderful collectors,
And thanks for the occasional old fart.
Yours, always,
Vladimir
Bilbo, riddle master, barrel rider. One of the best trickster archetypes ever written about- clever, ingenuous, and home sick every step of the way. There is something in the Hobbit that LOTR does not contain- and that is the spirit of Bilbo. His wise cracks, his wit, his cunning and his intelligence. He was the one who started it, who found the ring and began one of the greatest stories ever told.
To Dear Bilbo,
You go there and back again
With a fist, full of treasure!
You Tookish soul come back again
With a head, full of Adventure!
You go there and back again
With a book, full of pleasure!
Happy Birthday our dear old Burglar!
In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. A very special hobbit, named Bilbo Baggins. Bilbo lived through many adventures, with dwarves, elves, and wizards, but the greatest of all, even greater than facing a dragon, was that of perduring in history. Who would’ve thought that a halfling, as some people might call him, would be known, admired, and loved by many people as today do.
Dear Bilbo once said that the road goes ever on and on, and in his case that’s true. For him the road will never end, a road that leads not to Mirkwood or the Lonely Mountain, but to the hearts of all those who are, were, and will be…
Ode to a Burglar
We must inform our Burglar,
That his task was worthy of a Scholar.
If there was a King of great wealth,
You would surely belong without stealth.
A commendable hobbit whom did obtain,
A trinket of value which was not in vain.
Bilbo’s heart bravely lead him,
As he conquered foes o’ so grim.
A song that’s praiseworthy of Middle Earths lore,
Would be that of a hobbit and the ring he bore.
There is a reason he felt pity,
As he out riddled a creature o’ so witty.
Doubtfully any will ever forget,
The life of a Baggins,
Who is remembered with a melodious Octet.

Ode to Bilbo
Here around this fire again
We celebrate your birthday night
As has been done for years so far
Since that day you left this Land
Old ones who knew you tell your tale
To young astonished hobbit faces
And so the Story lives through time
Your memory shines in hearts and minds.
Twenty years ago, when I was eight years old I was given the 50th Anniversary edition of The Hobbit. I cannot believe it has been so long. Since then other tales have become better known than the one that started it all, but for me the first story will always be the best. I am glad my old friend is with me after all these years and that together we have travelled there and back again.

Bilbo my friend, it’s your 70th year.
Let us raise up our pints and all give a cheer.
You’ve always been there, like a best friend,
since we first met in seventy seven.
From your book, and a movie by Rankin and Bass,
I learned more about life then I did while in class.
You taught me to dream, and about doing what’s right, and how sunshine can save you from trolls in the night.
Ilearned about friendship, about greed and of gold,
and how many dwarves one barrel can hold.
I learned that dragons are evil down to thier core,
and how burgling can be a bothersome chore.
To always let pity stay your sword hand,
because creatures like Gollum are partof a much bigger plan.
How to sting giant spiders and fool the woodelves,
to put other people over ourselves.
But the lesson I hold most dear to my heart,
the one that I learned from the very start,
From an adventure’s beginning down to its end,
I can never go wrong with you as my friend.
Happy birthday Bilbo, May the hair on your feet never grow thin.
Bilbo Baggins, of Bag End,
been There and Back Again
t’would seem.
The reluctant adventurer
returned home…A burglar
supreme.
Proclaimed, “dragon fierce
in a pinch”;
and ever clever as well.
Faced Trolls, Elves, Orcs
and spiders
en route to where men and
Smaug dwelled.
Thirteen plus one entered
Lake Town
where both music and dance
did abound.
Then on to Lonely Mountain
and the secret entrance was
found.
Ring cloaked Bilbo dared go
thrice,
lastly, burgled the dwarves
lost prize.
An enraged Smaug erupted…
raining destruction from the
skies.
Bard of Dale slew the dragon
as the world exploded in flame.
The dwarves called the mountain
their due.
Elves and men disputed the claim.
A battle loomed, lines sharply
drawn;
Halfling reason fell on deaf ears.
Suddenly faced by Orcs and Wargs,
their true alliances became clear.
Eagle-borne men turned the tide…
At last, beauty and wealth restored.
Home to Shire, small chests and
One Ring;
contract fulfilled and his just
reward.
In a hole in the ground, there lived a hobbit,
who was hired to seek dragon gold and rob it.
With thirteen dwarves and Gandalf the gray,
he set forth from BagEnd one bright, sunny day.
The road went ever on and he was tired to the bone,
after meeting three trolls who later turned to stone.
His journey led him to Rivendell fountains,
and onward still through the dark Misty Mountains.
In a deep, dank cave armed with his trusty sword, Sting,
he guessed riddles from Gollum and found The One Ring.
The goblins gave chase and set the trees on fire,
but he was saved when the eagles bore him higher and higher.
In old Bjorn’s house, he found plenty of room,
but nothing prepared him for dark Mirkwood gloom.
His friends, in barrels, from the Wood Elves he did save,
then on through Laketown to Old Smaug’s cave.
The battle of five armies our hero helped win;
he then returned home and wrote “There and Back Again”.
For seventy years we’ve loved this hobbit;
so brave and so stout.
So, here’s to Bilbo Baggins!
May the hair on his feet never fall out!
Riding on legs both stocky and fat,
he moved rather fast like a cunning Tomcat.
His youth perserved by an old ancient ring,
he wielded an elvish blade the Elders called Sting.
He outwitted some trolls and a Dragon named Smaug,
and entered a forest shrouded in fog.
His adventures were grand and he had many stories to tell,
For the next sixty years he lived his life well.
As he aged in the Shire out of the west grew a Shadow,
For the time had come to pass the ring onto Frodo.
So Bilbo set out from the Shire, to live with the elves was his only desire.
It was not too long before Frodo completed his quest,
and a weary Bilbo set sail into the West.
So the story of Bilbo Baggins comes to an end,
But his adventures live on if our imaginations can pretend.
Here’s to swimin’ with 3 foot tall women…
Happy B-day Mate, may your road go ever on.
Through valleys deep and aeries high
Across the plains where king’s blood lies.
From the darkest shadows in forgotten forests,
All have heard the tale.
Where ancient river’s voices sing
Elven tales of the elder kings.
Far beyond the white towers sight
The land is ever green!
Here, there be hobbits
A goodly folk, among them lived our hero.
Baggins by name, Elf-friend he became
And with man and dwarf he strode
The spider’s Sting, the dragons bane.
The barrel rider, and wizard’s friend.
The riddle master, on eagles wings,
The “ring” of truth is in these things
The bane of all he carried far.
His innocence, all that quelled the power.
A simple hobbit, with simple dreams.
The smallest hands, the greatest deeds!
Of far off mountains, and unseen caves,
Of trolls, and goblins, and golden rings
Of bears, and wars, and elvish kings
There and back again till the end of days.
Here we spend this age of man
But in the west a promised land.
In the light of the Eldar, where all was made
There rests our hobbit,
And Bilbo Baggins was his name!
Dear friend Bilbo
you found the ring
but never gave in to the power,
you had a birthday bash with your friends
but had to make a long needed journey,
so you gave up dear precious and set out
on your long quest.
I hope you find what you are searching for
good luck and good journeys
until we meet again.
To The Professor:
From your fabulous mind,
With your thought filled hands,
You reached into our lives, our hearts, our dreams.
With your words you have buried there a treasured trove.
Ages—places—friends that never would have been
Without you.
Ode to Bilbo Baggins,
This wee little man
Let go of the One Ring
From his wee little hand.
You set out to reclaim
The Lonely Mountain of lore
Knowing full well
It would be quite the chore.
You used your ring
To help along the way
From your ulimate goal
You did not stray.
In matters of hiding
You were the best
Ditching your cousins
For some much needed rest.
A writer at heart
you had much to convey
And your words still move us
Each in thier own way.
Old you did grow
as many of us will
But we can always find you
Living in us still.
So until we meet
On that far away shore
I shall keep you in memory
And bask in your lore.

What an AWESOME idea for a contest! The Istari, Dwarves, Elves, and Men who have submitted “Odes to Bilbo” so far, are a group of clever and talented individuals! Selecting a winner from among these entrants is going to be a major challenge, Sideshow.I will NOT enter the contest due to a lack of talent, but I will check back to read any new submissions—GOOD LUCK to all of the participants, and keep writing!
Dear Sideshow, this is to the tune of the Old Walking Song.
The Road goes ever on and on,
down from Tolkien’s mind where it began.
Far ahead WETA’s work has gone,
and I will buy them when I can.
Pursuing you with eager purse,
until they make Premium SAM!
When others can’t and throw a curse,
I’ll be there an avid fan.

My Dearest Bilbo,
I’ve known you since we both were tweens
And walked together the road from your door
And though we both thought comfort was king
We found that life held so much more
Dwarves and elves and wizards we’ve known
And tricksy creatures that dwell below
Eagles and bears and great halls of stone
And mighty jewels alight with an inner glow
Through fire, and water, and even death
And forests both dark and bright
Beauty that took away our breath
Immortals clothed in light
We’ve known the joy that friendship brings
And the pain of betrayal and loss
The dearth of Winter and the promise of Spring
And we’ve learned to count the cost
But through it all, one thing still stands
The call of your world remains
I’ve read your adventures more than 50 times
Yet I can’t wait to read them again
Happy Birthday, my dear Halfling friend
And may you have many more
As a new generation picks up your book
And joins you at your door.
Ode to Bilbo
He left his humble home, restless for adventure
With dwarves he sought to be the stealthy burgler
Of treasures old under the mountain
Guarded by the golden worm
Desired riches of the dwarves
But a greater treasure he did find,
By luck or chance or fate he found, the one
In gollum’s cave and riddle game
The magic ring he did possess
and greater still his age passed
Burgler, master thief
He loved his food and he loved his leaf
Writer of many happy songs
Memories of times and ages gone long
Passed his precious on
He dwelt long with the elves of Imladris
Until the West called him home
With Gandalf and Elven Lords he sailed
And in honor he dwells in peace
In the land of Valinor unassailed
Burgler, master thief
He loved his food and he loved his leaf
Writer of many happy songs
Memories of times and ages gone long

Hail Dear Bilbo my halfling friend,
It would be good to hear your voice again.
To once again see you in action,
Directed by old Peter Jackson.
To see the beginning, not the end.
To take us there and back again.
Once more to visit Rivendell,
and towering peaks where goblins dwell.
To sting the spiders and tempt fate,
by burgling from Smaug the Great.
To see the wood elves whose ire you woke,
and brave the hall’s of Durins folk.
So, Dear Bilbo, please return,
And give us that for which we yearn.
Come back from the land’s of Elven birth,
and return once more to Middle Earth!
Hello there, dear old friend,
It is a long, far time ago I have seen you. So that is why I am sending you this letter, old friend.
When I first ever met you, I thought you would not have the guts to take on the fight against that cursed dragon. After I had fought in the Battle of the Five Armies, I would have never thought I would met someone even braver than the men I met those days.
My son Gimli has told me the tails of your brave nephew. It seems your offspring is just as brave as you are! I must say it is a pitty when I heard that you are going to leave this world, off to the Grey Havens of the Elves. Well, everyone has his time to leave this world once.
I must say, brave, old and wise Bilbo, I will miss you, even though I have not seen you in years. Goodbye, old fellow, and may the Higher Beings be mercyfull over you.
Yours truly,
Glóin, son of Gróin, and friend to one of the greatest dragonslayers ever.
(Written by Vincent, NL)
Dearest old fellow,
The days are now behind you. We look to the ships, to the West and I find myself remembering that morning long ago - when first I stopped by the Hill and brought adventure to your very doorstep before dragging you away towards it!
Your Courage, I never doubted for a moment, nevermind what other minds thought! I knew it was in you, you rascal, hiding behind desperate pleas from your well-fed belly! You faced the dragon with more wit and I daresay wisdom than those that deem themselves “The Wise” could ever even dream of.
I remember quietly how the elves thought Hobbits “quaint” and sometimes “silly”. How I chuckled when your love of lore reminded them of their lives, stories and histories.
You became an elder voice that they themselves could not forsee!
So you’ve left the Shire behind you once and all, as we leave this middle earth forever, it finally occurs to me, that i could not have chosen, in all the lands, a better travelling companion than thee. And Fellowship indeed is worth more than any dragon horde, you yourself can see. As always I remain, indeed, your dear friend G.
