Aragorn Premium Format Figure from The Lord of the Rings - Sideshow Collectibles
  1. DathVada says:

Hey folks, this question is directed toward anyone working at SideShow. Just wanted to say you guys make some great models, and I was thinking of purchasing the Aragorn Premium Format Figure. However, the change in the face sculpt has made me withdraw my initial plan of buying it. Not to say the new sculpt is bad, and I have seen many photos taken of the model, both professional and from collectors who have it. I just find the original face bears a far closer likeness to Viggo Mortensen. Would it be possible to release the prototype if enough customers demanded it?

  2. Dave Mac (Silsden) says:

Fine suggestions coming in. However Boromir was a warrior born and to see him brought to his knees and ultimatly killed is a great moment as it depicts the ultimate in self sacrifice by not refusing to give in to despair as his father does. Boromir stands sheildless, outnumbered and ready to redeem himself for the lives of the Hobbits, risng again and again to face certain death. The PF Aragorn is the triumphant hero piece, Boromir the tragic. Stick with the kneeling pose, put Lurtz nearby and rejoice that Aragorn is here to give him final redemption (and help Lurtz lose a few pounds of ugly fat)!

  3. Sean says:

I submit that another powerful image is Boromir blowing the horn of Gondor at Amon Hen.

  4. Dave says:

Thanks for the kind words, Dave Mac! I really hope to see a Boromir PF like that. Although, I admit, DJ’s suggestion of the Caradhras scene makes a very strong case for itself. The only ‘gripe’ I have with that way of portraying Boromir is that it immortalizes his moment of weakness instead of his final moment of redemption. And, in terms of accessories, I don’t think we have to miss any. In the Amon-Hen scene when he has been struck by the first (or even second) arrow, Boromir still has his sword; he rises after the first as well as after the second arrow to fight on. The Horn of Gondor could be found on the base, cloven. His shield, yes, alas, that he left below when the Fellowship beached the boats. But, for me, the omission of the shield would be a small price to pay for such an iconic piece as a wounded Boromir Premium Format. Heck, I’d pay $600.00 for that!

  5. DJ says:

Its obvious that a Boromir PF is highly anticipated by all, and therefore should be given a huge amount of scrutiny on how he should be presented as such. I think, to most of us, the first image we all think of is when he is on his knees after finally succumbing to his injuries..BUT, lets remember what the idea behind the PF pieces is- to portrait a character in a way as to represent who or what they are about, or stand for. I think sideshow has the opportunity to do something truly unique for not only the character of Boromir but for an LOTR PF in general. He should be presented to reflect what the central theme of the character, which was he was a troubled dunedain that was slowly becoming obsessed with the One Ring. Going back over the movie, I think the best scene that shows it all really starting was when he first picks up the ring out of the snow after it breaks off Frodos neck. Have the PF pose right from that scene, him holding up the ring gazing into it, and along with recreating this scene would come a very cool base: a snowy slope, which hasnt been done for a PF before (as far as I know). Doing him from that scene would also make sure the PF has all his goodies; sword, shield and horn. Doing a PF from any other part from the movie (aside from Moria) he would be missing something (such as a wounded-Boromir-on-knees PF would be missing both sword and shield as accessories). Maybe the caradrhas scene isnt the absolute best, but it certainly gives a much better opportunity for a PF to shine then most. Just my 2 cents.

  6. Dave Mac says:

Expecting His Highness to be shipped soon and put him right next his old mucker Lurtz! and as to Dave’s suggestion of a dying Boromir on his knees? INSPIRED!!! What an image that conjures up.

  7. Steve Andexler says:

I want to apologize for passing premature judgement on this figure. After seeing the new 360 degree images I like what I see. Now I can’t wait to get it. Thank goodness I did not cancel this. Thank you for the new images.

  9. masterchief says:

ı can’t understand why they change the first figure. First one was perfect .This don’t even look like aragorn .I think I will cancel buying this figure..

  10. STEVE ANDEXLER says:

What happened between “we are processing your order” and this is what you paid for ? Looking at the new photos I feel like I have been dupped. I have spent the last hour looking at the protype photos and these latest ones, and can not for the life of me understand how you go from a pretty good likeness of Viggo to Viggo on steroids. The cape isn’t even the same color. Please tell me someone has taken the wrong pictures.

  11. Sean says:

I wish the final product looked more like the prototype. I’m disappointed that I spent all these months thinking the figure was awesome, when it really was just good.

  12. Edison says:

We need a new Backstage Pass….

  13. DoubleD says:

The new production pics are very disappointing to say the least! I’m thinking about cancelling this one. The proto looked excellent, but this … :(

  14. Shadow of the Witch King says:

I am a big fan of the Premium Format and currently own Frodo,Gandalf, and Lurtz.I have Aragorn and Galadriel on order.I would love to see a Witch King w/armour,Sauruman,or Boromir.

  15. DJ says:

Looks like a great PF figure overall and maybe not EXACT likeness to Viggo, but as close as a sculpt needs to be. I for one have a small issue with the scabbard,, seems to be a very different shade of green than the real one, and theres no metal coloring at the top…other then that yes for sure the base needs to be changed to FOTR before I would buy it. I currently have both Exclusives for Lurtz and Gandalf so I guess I will be going for the Excl. here too, it really is fun changing up the looks of an otherwise unposable statue.
Oh and just an FYI to everyone: the LOTR PF figs are NOT Sideshow/WETA pieces, that partnership ended a few years ago. The LOTR stuff is all sideshows baby now, and doing a fantastic job I might add.
Now lets see another baddie, Saruman? Or maybe the Morgul Lord Witchking?

  16. QuiGonFishing says:

I just have to say, I’m not a LOTR collector, though I love the movies. I’m TOTALLY not a collector of the PF line - too much money, and I find the 1/6 pieces immenently more desirable because of their versatility.

All that said, I jumped all over this one! The Exclusive AND the Regular edition! This will be my first LOTR collectible ever! Couldn’t help myself. The likeness of Viggo is astonishing! Right up there with the new 1/6 Old Ben. I’m pretty excited!

If they do a PF Gandalf the Grey, I expect I’ll ring that bell too… But then that’s it! Right?

  17. Dave says:

Fantastic!! Finally a statue of Aragorn that does more than just bear his name (sorry sideshow, but this really is the first proper Aragorn). The likeness is excellent. I haven’t bought any of the previous premium formats cause it’s just a lot of money, but I’m definitely paying three hundred bucks for this one! :)

And I’m hoping for - visualizing even - a premium format of Boromir. Forest floor top base, already pierced by one or two arrows, using the last of his strength to defend ‘the little ones’. (Although, a statue of him on his knees could be a wonderful piece, dramatic, and very original.) Either way, it would make a great statue and a deserved tribute to Sean Bean’s performance.

  18. wetanut says:

I’m really not a nit-picker, but believe this pose (& indicated also by clothing and sword) is from FOTR, yet the pedastal shows ROTK. Hoping you’re gonna change it?

  19. Gumby says:

Yes Sideshow, as this is the scene from Amon Hen [as you yourselves have described it in your product information] when does the nameplate say “Return of the King” on it?

  20. Streuliy says:

Great job, Sideshow… already pre-ordered…. thanks… But I have noticed a small error… Why did you write “Return of the King” on the base…. This posture comes from “the fellowship of the Ring”…

  21. dannyparker says:

I’d say this is the best LOTR face sculpt I’ve seen in all the lines - fantastic job. Very tempted to pick this up.

  22. PuzzleMaster5 says:

I’m absolutely jumping for joy over this one. This will definitely be my first PF LOTR Figure. Great job SS!!

  23. stefanos says:

“The likeness is great”? “Spot-on likeness to Viggo”? Are you boys and girls blind? Althought it’s better than previus statues it needs more more work to do. If you want to see amazing likeness to Aragorn try the Toynami’s Aragorn cinemaquette with silicon-skin and individually plugged hair and beard. With real metal sword, knife and chain mail and leather outer tunic. Anyway i ‘ll buy this one too just because i want to have the complete collection of premium formats. But i insist it needs more work to do yet.

  24. Aaron says:

Can’t believe SS will produce this… the likeness is “terrifying”!!

  25. darthmatrix says:

Looks great so far. Well done SS.

  26. Jill says:

By far, the absolute, definitive likeness of Viggo Mortensen. The sculptors have done it again and obviously studied the angles big time.

A real beauty, need to add to my Sideshow collection.

    Hey Santa, are you listening?:)

p.s. I’ve been good all year!

  27. SarumanOnNazgul says:

Glad to see that this line is still alive and KICKING,my other PF figures were getting lonely. Can’t wait to add this to my collection. The pics always look a bit less then the wriell thing so if the likeness now already is TOP i can’t wait to see him in person. Thanks Sideshow.

  28. Patti says:

That really is a great likeness of Viggo - even down to the hands! Too bad these are really out of my price range…

  29. pordster says:

Thank you for this Christmas present, Sideshow. This premium format looks truly amazing. I LOVE IT. Only problem is that now I have to buy Lurtz as a companion piece :O

  30. Tom Fett says:

This is the kind of work that makes Sideshow a leader in collectable’s. This is the best peace that you have ever turned out to date in the L.O.T.R. line what to do.

  31. Vinny says:

Err… Let me blink with my eyes frst, a couple of times…
    No, it’s impossible… Wow…

  32. Jennifer says:

WOW! I am going to sleeping on top of all my sideshow boxes soon. The colours of his clothes look really rich and vibrant, and the detailing of his beard and shirt look fantastic!!

  33. Michelle says:

He looks great! Fantastic job. :D

  34. js in rochester says:

    AWESOME !!!!

    I am loving it….

I think the black hair is just a start from the proto… things will change and get better.

I will say the portrait is awesome ! Can’t wait to see more.

    Way to go Sideshow !

  37. Peter Jordan says:

I have been hoping for this one…………. it looks like it is time to buy another wall unit!

  38. Susan says:

    Wow! It is perfect!

  39. Jürgen says:

Thank You for this, but please bring more PF Statues out ,because 2 Years waiting for 2 - 3 Statues is to long!!!
Thats the not the good way to make Fans happy!
3-4 Statues in one Year is better!!!!!!
    Jürgen

  40. abake says:

    Wow!
I don’t collect PF’s, but that is the best likeness of Viggo I have seen.
    Congrats!

  41. mudshark says:

WOW!!! This announcement really took me by surprise, but I can see I’m not the only one. The portrait is outstanding, as are the costume and the selected pose. I was among those who had decided not to collect this line of LOTR, until I managed to get a Lurtz exclusive from the WL, that is. After that I was hooked. I will happily add this amazing Aragorn PF to the collection! Can’t wait to see more pics of him. Thanks for the pre-Christmas surprise!!!

  42. SDJ says:

I can’t say that I care for that one strand of hair across the forehead but the likeness is uncanny. Once again you can count on my patronage. Just try to keep the price manageable.

  43. emslotr says:

Yippee!!!!!!!!! This looks awesome! Better start saving now!!!

  44. Simon says:

At Last! Likeness is spot on!!

  45. Seretur says:

Looks very nice! And poseable with Lurtz.
    Very, very nice. Congratulations!

  46. Stride says:

    O_M_G…
Incredible! What did you wizards do? Sit Viggo down in FRONT of you while you designed this???
    Perfect!
You guys and gals are the cat’s ass. Indeed!
    And I love ya!!!!
    Mae govannen!!!

  47. Can Dincer says:

Finally we see a aragorn with great likeness. thank you sideshow.

  48. aggie says:

i, too, am glad to see a good likeness of viggo…previously, i’ve had to pretend that the artists were making aragorn, not viggo…lol…anyway…good effort here…now, can’t anyone make a good likeness of liv tyler as arwen? please please please? ps…since i’m good at pretending, i am saying to myself that aragorn’s hair is dark from the sweat of battle ;)

  49. Oxfordian says:

Looks good to me with a nice pose too. Not buying this line but I do hope it is a line saver for those who are.

  50. Dino says:

Sweet. Would have preferred Aragorn in his Strider ranger garb with the leather duster, but I guess that was covered in the 12″ figure. Thanks for showing some LOTR PF love. Now we need another evil PF…Saruman, perhaps?

  51. Shane says:

I love the Elven cloak, the color is very close to that in the film, and the brooch looks great too!
The expression on Aragorn’s face looks kingly and he’s in good motion from this picture!
If there’s anything I’m not so satisfied with, it is the shirt, the color Grey seems not the right one.

Anyway, I’m looking forward to it and can’t wait to perchase one! Aragorn is my all time favourate!

  52. celefinniel says:

I already have Strider, but this may be a necessary duplication. Love the smocking detail on the shirt!

  53. Doe says:

I have Lurtz and I passed on Gandalf the White because I had some issues with the sculpt, but this one looks pretty good and may be a go go. I may just have to pick this one up. I am a LOTR fan, and I hope there is still some great pieces left in this line.

  54. mlefort@kc.rr.com says:

I’ve got to get on this list. I waited too long and lost out on the 12″ figure. Soon John Wayne will have someone to talk to when I’m away.

  55. Anonymous says:

The likeness is great. This one is gonna be very tempting. Can’t wait to see more.

  56. roguebaron says:

looks good so far, but please don’t wait to long show us more!

  57. Nicolo says:

I haven’t purchased any of the Aragorn figures because none of them looked like Viggo. So far this one might be a winner.

  58. Gruff Old Bear says:

I must agree — this is the best likeness of Viggo Mortensen I’ve seen. His likeness has eluded many sculptors, but it looks like you caught him!

  59. Fritz says:

Very nice, looks good so far. I’m loving me some PF announcements!

  60. Gumby says:

First Saruman with blue eyes, now Aragorn with black hair….are you guys color blind?

  61. Zabrak Nut says:

SPOT-ON likeness. Good job SS - unfortunately, I don’t buy statues, busts, or maquettes. But if I did, this would be high up on the collecting list…

  62. ColinS says:

I can’t wait to have Aragorn battle the best Sideshow/Weta LOTR item of all time…PF LURTZ. What will the exclusive be? And SS let’s keep the production size of the statue below 1250- total. Thank you.

  63. rjd4short says:

That is the best sculpt portrait of Viggo Mortensen I have seen. Well done!

  64. DarthNeil says:

I would have preferred a Helm’s Deep Aragorn from The Two Towers but I suppose we got that with the dio— This Fellowship Aragorn looks to have captured the character quite nicely.

  65. MesaScott says:

I don’t know if I’m digging the face, or the BLACK hair. Please have some better pics soon to hopefully revive this line.

  66. ColinS says:

WELL, ITS ABOUT TIME…..I’M IN FOR SHO’

  67. oaktown2000 says:

Sweet. Glad to see getting all of the fellowship in Premium Format is gaining steam
