Since their debut at Star Wars Celebration 4, the Life-size C3PO and R2-D2 figures have undergone some intricate revisions and improvements. We are pleased to announce that production is under way, and they will begin shipping later this year! Life-Size R2-D2 and C-3PO Questions Answered - 06/12/08
Is the material used, metal or fiberglass that is painted and distressed to resemble metal?
The material used for both R2-D2 and C-3PO dome is fiberglass with a metallic paint effect.
Will the age effect paint application be done by hand to each unit, so that some will come out more distressed than others? If so, what might be the range of difference in the paint effects from one R2 to the next?
Talented artists at the factory apply the age effect paint by hand. This paint application will be closely supervised and monitored to be sure that the effect is neither too heavy nor too light, and that the dirt/grime effect is within a range deemed acceptable by both Sideshow and Lucasfilm. Sideshow is responsible for the manufacturing of C-3PO and R2-D2, and quality control is a top priority.
Do the sound effects for both droids play in a track order, or are they played in a random order? Do they start with the same sound effect each time the droid is activated?
The droid sound effects will play in a track order, and they will begin with the same sound effect each time they are activated. The droid sound and light features are optional, so you can display the droids with lights activated without sound if you prefer.
Do the lights and sound activate automatically when someone passes by them?
The light and sound functions will be activated by pushing a well-hidden button, located on the head of each character. One press will activate the lights, a second press will activate the light and sound functions and a third press will turn the lights and sound off. The choice is yours!
Will 3PO's hand be able to rest on R2's dome when their bases are placed right next to one another?
No, the bases do create separation between C3PO and R2-D2 where it is not possible for C3PO to touch R2's head.
Are the droids attached to their bases, or can they be displayed directly on the floor?
R2-D2 can be displayed directly on the floor without the base. C-3PO cannot stand unassisted and does require the base.
Will R2's center leg be retractable, and will he be able to be tilted to the vertical position?
No, the center leg is not retractable. For stability, it is locked in a fixed position.
When were the still images currently posted on the Sideshow website taken for these products? Do they reflect an early prototype, or are they more recent, reflecting the production run?
The images currently on the website show a near-final version of the droids, but the images will be updated once the final and approved production pieces are available for photography. [R2-D2 Imagery] [C-3PO Imagery]
Thanks, guys! Keep an eye on future newsletters and homepage posts for updates on these Life-size R2-D2 and C-3PO droid replicas.
Suggestions for Submitting a Question
Do you have a question for our Production Team? [Ask Sideshow!]
Please Note: If you would like to submit a question using the form, please remember that Ask Sideshow should NOT be used as a way to solicit for a job, contact Customer Service, ask about a shipping date, or register a complaint. Most of those questions, comments, and solicitations can be most efficiently sent to us by filling out our online Customer Service Request Form.
Also, a fair warning: Questions that ask, "Will you be doing/Why don't you do [insert license or character name]?" will probably never be answered. We're happy to drop hints when we can, but we cannot answer any direct questions about what we're planning in the future for a variety of reasons, which include (but are not limited to) licensing, production, artistic contracts, and ever-changing schedules and projected release dates. Please feel free to use the form for all these sorts of questions or quasi-suggestions, BUT don't be offended when we don't answer to your full satisfaction... or don't answer at all - it's not personal, we promise!

How do i make c-3po talk?
Where could i get all the meatle?
would side show toy consider making a life size r2 d2 unit that actually moves and is fully remote controll.as these units are all ready being built by the r2 d2 builders club around the u.s. at present but these clubs will not sell to the public.this is a product that would really be a winner.this is something that would really interest me as a fan.
First of all, Sideshow, you guys do an awesome job- thanks for producing such great collectibles! Is there any chance we can get some kind of update on these since we haven’t had one for a long, long time? For many of us, Sideshow already has at least $4500 worth of our money (due to Flex-pay). With the economy the way it is, it would be nice to have some level of assurance that our product does really exist. Any type of update would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much, keep up the great work!
Come on! Bring us some new photos of 3PO!!! I`m sick of all the delays…The most expensive collectible, but we don`t see the final-version! (Comment from Sideshow June 08!: “The pictures on the website are near-final versions”…We pay a lot of money and we want to see new pictures!
Hey, Sideshow!
Okay, I’m not trying to be a nag but I heard from what I think is a reliable source that the droids estimated shipping date has been bumped to 1st Quarter 09. The wait is killin’ me but I know it will ultimately be worth it. Can anyone confirm this though?
Hey! are the droids definitely going to be shipped in November?!?!

Hello Sideshow!
What about a statement regarding C-3PO`s eyes are not accurate? Every TRUE fan who saw 3PO at Comic-Con knows that the eyes are not accurate (since we all know him 31 years…)They are too big and it looks like he`s wearing eyeglasses…
We need answers, because there`s a great discussion about this in the forums out there!
Yikes, I think the anticipation of the release of these droids is causing some jittery fans. I am curious about the guy’s comment about the eyes not being accurate. I think the droids look 100% accurate based on the current photos. Anyway, great job and can’t wait for the release!
Will this still ship in September, and when will we see pix of final version?
Since I pre-ordered, was hoping to see an update Video or Pix from Comicon. Didn’t see anything, which concerned me since I saw a lot on many other products. Anyone there get a firsthand look?
I missed a new Backstage-Pass-Video on Comic Con. The painting is great BUT (!!!) the eyes are NOT accurate - they are too big. All things are done very well, but the eyes MUST be smaller!!!
C-3PO shows his left arm up in couple of pics. Are C-3POs arms, wrists and head are the poseable?
Is there a single base that accommodates both droids
available ?
