Welcome to a brand new year and a brand new round of Ask Sideshow. We’ve pulled a few questions, submitted by your fellow collectors, from our Ask Sideshow form, which we have established as another way to include the fans in the fun of collecting! Your Questions Answered - New Year’s Edition - 1/1/09

Are there any plans to make 1:6 scale Star Wars Droids, since you did the Life-Size ones?

We are looking at the Droids for possible inclusion in one of our lines, beyond Life-Size. We’re not ready to make promises, but it is something we’re looking at. Star Wars 12-inch in 2009 is definitely more focused on the armored side of Star Wars.

I really like the X-Men VS Sentinel Diorama with the light up feature. Did you ever consider adding a light up feature like this for the 12-inch Star Wars light-sabers or any of the other lines?

Yes, we have looked into methods for illuminating light-saber blades in 1:6 scale. It is possible, and many talented customizers have built them. There are two difficulties that we would have to solve to include them in the product - those being pricing (it is fairly expensive to reproduce, reliably, in mass production) and power source - as we believe that wiring the light-saber hilt to a battery compartment is a fairly unattractive solution, we’ll have to look for alternatives if we choose to go this route in the future.

Will Sideshow be producing a new film-based Iron Man Comiquette or Premium Format in the near future? With the movie success and the incredible demand for the Red/Gold Comiquette and the Stealth version, it would only make logical sense for fans.

We’re still enjoying the love affair with Iron Man too. Yes, there is more Iron Man product on the horizon but not in the immediate future.

You have recently revealed lots of great new 12-inch but nothing for The Lord of the Rings. Are there new figures of this license in production at the moment?

During Spooktacular, in a candid moment in the chat, it was revealed that the 12-inch LOTR line is on hold.

This is true…

Sideshow is moving forward with development on all other LOTR lines, including Premium Format, Dioramas, and Legendary Scale Busts. We remain committed to the LOTR license and love the world of Middle-earth.

It was a very tough decision to put the 12-inch LOTR line on hold. It is possibly the most difficult 12-inch license for development and production, challenging Sideshow to maintain the high quality and accuracy standards that we pride ourselves on. Each character requires unique problem solving, due to details of the costume, weathering or other paint applications, or different body shapes or sizes. As we’ve proven, they are certainly within the realm of possibility, but they do take a lot longer than the average product for development and production. Our development team is talented and not at all afraid of rolling up their sleeves and digging into the work when it is appreciated by the fan base and collector community.

Unfortunately, solicitation of figures like Faramir, Frodo and Samwise demonstrated that the interest in the 12-inch LOTR line is not as healthy as in years past; that the fan base is not as large as in those golden years. We say this knowing that there is an enthusiastic, loyal fan base remaining for our 12-inch line - there simply aren’t enough of us at the present moment. That being said, things certainly could change.

12-inch Gandalf was a true success on all levels, and we are very proud of the final product. While it is very disappointing to all of us to put the line on hold, we would rather have the line “end” on a high note rather than fade out on a whimper. Gandalf will, for now, stand as our favorite entry in our The Lord of the Rings 1:6 scale line.

The 4th installment of Terminator is releasing next year. Do you have any plans to release figures for this?

Yes, you may have seen our announcement at Comic-Con 2008 that we have licensing to product Terminator Salvation products. We’re currently in development on several items in partnership with Stan Winston Studio.

Are there any plans for Sideshow to continue work with Stan Winston Studio or ADI to produce more maquettes from the Alien, Predator and AVP series of films?

Absolutely! Especially with ADI - things are really heating up! You’ve probably noticed a steady flow of maquettes and prop replicas, and you can look forward to a NICE collection of ADI Alien & Predator products throughout 2009 (and beyond).

I am thoroughly impressed with Sideshow’s first Indiana Jones 12-inch release, particularly the wealth and detail of Indy’s accoutrements, a Colt .45 revolver and an M1917. Will other figures in the line come with a similar bounty? Will Indy ever get a horse or other accessory packs, like the Ark of the Covenant?

Well, the Ark of the Covenant has found it’s place in the line as an accessory with the Exclusive Toht figure, and we’re pleased with the success of all of the Indiana Jones 12-inch Figures announced to date. The Indiana Jones and GI Joe figures certainly are heavy on accessories - they need them to be ‘complete.’ We don’t currently have a plan for a 1:6 scale horse, but it could be an interesting addition to the line!

I recently received my Indiana Jones 12-inch Figure, and while I love it, his right arm is very floppy - it’s hard to get him to hold any poses with the right arm. Is it something you’ll improve on other figures?

Yes, most definitely. Indy is the first use of our new Prometheus body, and we’re still fine-tuning the tooling & production materials to improve the body quality and joint tightness. With each release on the Clone body and Prometheus body, you should see improvement.

I’m out of space! I love the big stuff, but I’ve finally run out of room in my display. The Alien & Predator dioramas are the best - because I can display them mounted on my wall. Any chance that you’re planning to apply that format to any other lines?

Yes, absolutely! We’ve heard the display space concern from many collectors, and we’ll be introducing a few new wall-mountable collectible product lines within some popular licenses in 2009. Stay tuned!

I collect the Premium Format line - and it seems like there are more and more parts shipping separate from the figure that I have to assemble at home. I’m not complaining - just curious why that is?

Some of those decisions are made for Customer Service reasons. If we can separate small or fragile parts, there’s a better chance that the figure will arrive to you intact. If for any reason something breaks, it is be substantially easier - and less of a headache for the collector - to provide you with a replacement part (head, hand, belt, etc), than it is to replace the full product. It usually also cuts down on the dimensional size of the box, thus lowers the cost of shipping for our International collectors!

Artist Credits? I can’t find the artist credits listed on the Product Pages of Sideshow’s website anymore!

Too true! We’re working to update the website with the proper artistic credits. Credits haven’t been discontinued - we’re just a little behind in getting them posted.

Are you attending New York Comic-Con in 2009? Any other shows or conventions?

Sideshow Collectibles won’t be hosting a booth at either New York Toy Fair or New York Comic-Con, but we are planning some big new product announcements and other fun stuff on our site during those events. We always attend the San Diego Comic-Con at one of the biggest booths in the exhibit hall and hope to see you there in July!

Thanks to all the collectors for submitting such intriguing questions. Keep watching our Production Blog and listening to our Podcasts as we continue to answer more Ask Sideshow questions in the future!

Suggestions for Submitting a Question

Do you have a question for our Production Team? [Ask Sideshow!]

Please Note: If you would like to submit a question using the form, please remember that Ask Sideshow should NOT be used as a way to solicit for a job, contact Customer Service, ask about a shipping date, or register a complaint. Most of those questions, comments, and solicitations can be most efficiently sent to us by filling out our online Customer Service Request Form.

Also, a fair warning: Questions that ask, “Will you be doing/Why don’t you do [insert license or character name]?” will probably never be answered. We’re happy to drop hints when we can, but we cannot answer any direct questions about what we’re planning in the future for a variety of reasons, which include (but are not limited to) licensing, production, artistic contracts, and ever-changing schedules and projected release dates. Please feel free to use the form for all these sorts of questions or quasi-suggestions, BUT don’t be offended when we don’t answer to your full satisfaction… or don’t answer at all - it’s not personal, we promise!

  1. chezzy says:

Will We ever See A Thanos PF!!!???

  2. JS in Rochester says:

It’s kind of like if Sideshow announced a line of Premium Format Beatles figures, and then only released one a year and stopped the line at John, Paul and George…
    .
…but putting the line on hold indefinitely with no Ringo.
    .
We needs Merry & Pippin, though I suppose the Gimli by a previous company would suffice, though it’s not at all as fantastic as a Sideshow Gimli would be.
    .
IF YOU HAVE NOT BOUGHT A 12″ GANDALF, SAM OR FRODO, YOU OWE IT TO YOURSELF TO DO SO.
    YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!!!
(and if enough folks do so, it might get this amazing line up and running again, in spite of the infamous Faramir scenario.)

  3. Mike Buckley says:

I got all of the Sideshow 1:6 scale figures, and hoped and prayed that the Fellowship would be completed by Sideshow. Aragorn, Legolas, Boromir, Faramir (not in the Fellowship, but still a great character!), Frodo, Sam and finally Gandalf. So, now it’s on hold? Is that “code” for over Sideshow? I realize that lots of work go into the creation of these figures, and I’ve appreciated that. But why stop before the Fellowship is done? You really need to finish the Fellowship for us die-hard fans that have spent money on the rest of them expecting that we would get them all.

  4. John says:

I would like to see marvel PF, like Jack of Hearts, Warlock, Silver Surfer and Galactus.

  5. David says:

“The Fellowship is broken!”, Gimli exclaimed. “I’m not in it!”
My 12″ Strider as Aragorn cries “You can’t abandon Merry and Pippin to torment and death! Not while there is a fanbase still with us!”

Perhaps LOTR is a difficult line to work with, but the Fellowship really should be brought together before hanging it up. Maybe a lower limited edition could be made for those out there who do want a complete Fellowship(just hope they didn’t plan to sell the collection when it was complete - bloody annoying!). There seems to have been a ton of comments expressing disappointment. Looks like more than a few are still in a hefty LOTR fanbase!

I saw a comment that since the line is halted they’re going to sell the figures! I don’t understand that! Why get them in the first place?!!!

    Oh yeah! - the whole thing about Faramir being less than hoped for, it’s . . . not . . . that . . . BAAAAAD!!! I’m a Ranger fan anyway, so I was happy with it! Um . . . . I think I’m beginning to rant a bit. Sorry. . . . .

*ahem* - Everyone, grab your torch and pitchfork:

    Complete the Fellowship!
    Complete the Fellowship!
    Complete the Fellowship!

  6. Brad says:

Are there any Plans to do a second Elizabeth Swann figure ?I would love to see her in her “Calypso” outfit from the scene of Sao Feng’s Death, like that she would go perfectly with the seconde Sao .

  7. Robb B. says:

I know exactly what you mean, JS. It’s frustrating to watch the dios and PFs (which I can’t often afford) ramping up production while the 12-inchers get retired. And just when they were hitting their stride, too. Nuts.
    .
Though admittedly, it’s harder for me to watch the plug get pulled while a neverending parade of new Star Wars figures comes tumbling off the production line — one after the other! But I guess I’ll get over it. Someday. I hope!
    .
I’ll bet it’s got everything to do with overhead costs per unit. With Star Wars, the costumes are relatively simple, the figures (so far) have all been the same size and the accessories are comparatively limited. But with LOTR you’ve got the varying body sizes, the highly detailed clothes and the boatloads of intricate accessories. So when the figures finally come out, Sideshow probably didn’t clear much profit per figure when all was said and done.
    .
And, of course, it didn’t help that people weren’t buying them.
    .
Even though the PFs are larger, more expensive to produce and distributed in smaller quantities … I’m guessing the margin between profit and overhead is a lot more favorable for those bigger pieces.
    .
I’m betting that, at the end of the day, it’s just a cold, hard business decision. And probably one that wasn’t easy to make. When it comes to LOTR, Sideshow can make more money off the more sculptural collectibles than it can off the hugely complicated 12″ line.
    .
And I certainly can’t fault them for it. They’re a business, after all. They have to do whatever makes the most sense so they can STAY in business. Even when it hurts.
    .
It really bums me out that the fan base never really snapped up the 1/6 figures the way they should have. (HEY, GUYS! GANDALF IS STILL AVAILABLE! It boggles the mind.) Sideshow’s hand was forced. If the numbers don’t add up, then they don’t add up.
    .
Like I said before, I understand the decision … but that doesn’t mean I have to like it.
    .
    (sigh)

  8. JS in Rochester says:

If interest in LOTR has been so diminished that they are putting 12″ on hold indefinitely, why have there been new LOTR PFs and dioramas and such produced?

  9. Daniel Richard says:

SIDESHOW ACRYLIC CASES! Have you guys ever considered offering a range of generic acyclic display cases sized for 12″, PF’s, Maquettes and Busts? I think something with the Sideshow logo engraved along the sides or something and maybe on the base would look real snazzy. So many people purchase Acrylic cases for their collectibles or are looking for reliable and cost effective case makers, I think this would be a great addition to your offerings as long as the price was competitive. I personally would LOVE some Sideshow cases, especially for my life-size busts that don’t fit in regular display cabinets.

You’ll also notice that MANY collectors use those famous IKEA Detolf cases for their collectibles… they are somewhat short and I see loads of people placing acrylic cases on the top to make use of that wasted space.

Sideshow branded acrylic display cases… you know you want to!

  10. JS in Rochester says:

I think a lot of folks would like to see Hot Toys take over LOTR 12″ except for the fact that the figures they produce are very different looking.
    .
We would have a very mismatched-looking set of Hobbits if Merry and Pippin were that Hot Toys “super real” face look.
    .
Here’s hoping Sideshow just listens to us all and our customer-oriented reasoning and completes the Fellowship for those of us that invested in figures all along with that in mind.
    .
Unless Sideshow let Hot Toys use their style, etc, since HT helped develop the small bodies.
    .
What a major, longterm bummer this all is.
    .
If you are reading this and don’t own the fantastic Gandalf, Sam or Frodo and are at all a figures and LOTR fan, do yourself a favor and pick these up immediately. They look absolutely amazing in person. (See cooltoyreview’s review and gallery.)

  11. Robb B. says:

Nuts! I meant to say a stripped down Sideshow Merry/Pippin two-pack (with nothing but clothes and swords) WOULD have sold well.
    .
    Curse my stubby, illiterate fingers!

  12. tonymills says:

I’m not a lord of the rings collector myself but i feel very sorry for anyone who has invested in the 12″ line, sideshow you could at the very least release Gimli, pipin and merry to complete the 9, getting back to the subject in hand all i want is the same old requests as last year Premium Format Stormtrooer,Chewy, R2 & 3PO & ESB Lando.

  13. tomandshell says:

    Daniel Craig PF!!!

  14. Robb B. says:

Perhaps this is just the desperation of my fevered brain talking … but I wonder if there was ever any thought given to passing the LOTR line over to the folks at Hot Toys. Like Sideshow did with the Hellboy 12″ line.
    .
I’m sure there are a zillion contractual and licensing reasons why this couldn’t happen, but I wonder if the topic was ever broached. After all, Hot Toys seems to be a somewhat bigger operation with a little more in the way of resources.
    .
Still, I can’t help thinking a stripped down Sideshow Merry/Pippin two-pack (with nothing but clothes and swords) wouldn’t have sold well. Especially if the price point could have been held to around $100 - $120. Heck, I would have bought two if it would have helped.
    .
I wonder which aspect of figure development gobbles up the most time and money? The accessories or the costumes? Because I, personally, don’t need tons of accessories. It’s nice to have multiple display options, but if it means the difference between keeping the line going or pulling the plug … well, I’d certainly vote for fewer accessories.
    .
And I, for one, wouldn’t kick up too much of a fuss if Sideshow had to cut the occasional corner with the costumes either. Sure, some collectors would wail and moan (it’s kind of our “thing,” after all) … but I think most people would understand. I mean, this is Sideshow, we’re talking about. Even their most scaled down figures would be a thousand times better than anything else on the market. (Like, say, those new Hasbro Indiana Jones 12-inchers. Or the awful LOTR 12″ figures that Toy Biz released when the movies were still in theaters.)
    .
Anyhow … sorry for venting, everybody. I guess I’m just a sad collector grasping at straws.
    .
    (sigh)

  15. wardy says:

great no more LOTR 12″ figures.I managed 2 get the exclusive of every 1 and being out of work at the moment the only things I could afford and now thats it?Yeah thanks a lot no more LOTR 12″ but look out for 5 new Obi Wans in the coming months woohoo.Very disappointed looks like ebay will soon be flooded with 12″LOTR figures that WERE going to be treasured cheers.Oh by the way happy new year :-(

  16. Con says:

I think you should make some Motley Crue Premium format statues! :)

  17. JS in Rochester says:

Do you suppose any actual decision-makers are going to read any of this feedback. I hope they do and maybe reconsider their LOTR decision somehow.

  18. JS in Rochester says:

    Sandman speaketh truth.
    .
Though I suspect he is not the real Sandman.
    .
Also, to add to his thought, the LOTR 12″ line started years after the last film in 2003. Sure there was still a buzz in the air for a while, but I suggest that buzz could have been augmented by a more supported figure line by Sideshow.
    .
I guess we’re all bummed to see one of this company’s most beautifully done 12″ lines (aside from the infamous Faramir mass cries of “wtf”) put on hold when the reasons seem not quite right to us common folk and there a lot of customers feeling alienated right now after investing a lot of dough in a rockin’ 12″ Fellowship, only to be left hanging between only two figures a year and now possibly nut’n for a good long time to come.
    .
No fun at all, I say.
    .
And just to ask it, will a Blackbeard Premium Format really mean more to the company’s bottom line than putting new heads and clothes on Hobbit bodies to give the loyal customers/fans a Merry and Pippin?
    .
I work in the toy industry (graphics, packaging design, marketing, product concepting for some big names) and I just don’t get it.
    .
And for that matter, why do all the promo images we see of the 12″ Indy still have the infamous “chubby cheek” prototype and not the fantastically Ford-esque final product? Same with Sam and Frodo.
    .
Again, Sideshow is a fantastic company that puts out amazing figures (which is why this talkback is filled with folks passionate about the collecting hobby), but they leave this fellow toy industry guy scratching his head sometimes.

  19. ResonantFish says:

Well, if the Fellowship isn’t going to be completed, I have to sell them off…. which sucks! And seriously - you can’t base a decision like that on a sucko C-level character like Faramir.

  20. Tango78 says:

When can we expect to see the next Premium Format figure in the Indiana Jones line?
Would like to see Mola Ram, Belloq, Cairo Swordsman, Irina Spalko, Mutt Williams or even a Temple Of Doom Indy with ripped shirt and machete, that would be so awesome!

  21. Sandman says:

Sideshow is a great company but there’s a couple of issues that are disconcerting to me. The first one is failing to strike while the iron’s hot. They say the 12″ LOTR line died because there isn’t as big a fan base as there was in the “golden years”. But it’s hard to believe they’re a complete victim of circumstance when they released so few figures from the start and didn’t seem to put much effort into building momentum. Also, remember when the fourth Indiana Jones movie came out and there was . . . silence? (I think there was a T-shirt thing or something, but, you know, we’re here for toys). The other problem seems to be one of allocation. Sideshow does a lot of things well, from design to distribution, and they have one of the best customer service departments of any company I’ve dealt with. They’re extremely ambitious and have a LOT of lines and licenses, but it seems to me there’s a serious lack of focus. For instance, why start a new, generic dinosaur-themed property when everyone’s complaining about the slow schedule of the other lines? And for that matter, why start a dinosaur-themed property when you already hold the license to Jurassic Park? Also, doesn’t having busts AND dioramas AND PFs AND 12″ figures dilute energy (and commitment)? Don’t get me wrong, no one would complain if they could go the whole nine yards with each, but when 12″ lines start getting canceled while the dioramas and statues continue, someone’s doing a really good job of alienating customers, even, indirectly, ones who might not even collect the line. Like me, for instance.

  22. Robb B. says:

I fully appreciate that the LOTR 12″ line required a great deal of effort, engineering and expense. And I understand that the sales were disappointing.
    .
But was there every any thought given to stripping down the figures a little? In order to keep the line going?
    .
I, for one, would have been perfectly okay with fewer accessories (I can’t display them all anyway). I’d have been more than happy with more basic and “stripped down” LOTR figures (with fewer props and maybe just one set of hands) as long as the basic outfit was accurate and the portrait was good. Even at the higher price point.
    .
But alas … I’m sure such ideas (and better ones) were suggested and ultimately rejected at Sideshow. And I’m sure for good and logical reasons.
    .
But that doesn’t change the fact that my heart is broken cannot mend.
    .
    (sigh)

  23. Jean says:

    Hi Sideshow,

I collect all Star Wars Premium Format, think of announcing new Star Wars Premium Format in the year 2009?

    Thank you!

  24. Mick says:

SS, please take LOTR OFF OF HOLD! Please make Gimli, Merry, Pippin, and a Smeagol/Gollom (with head swap). This is really only three releases we’re asking for. Merry and Pippin would be a 2pack like the Frodo/Sam 2pack. Gimli would be on his own, and then the Smeagol/Gollum could just be the one figure using the hobbit body with a swappable head for his alter ego. Please don’t let us all down like this. It makes us all not want to collect Star Wars or the other lines for fear that you’ll leave out key characters and leave us hanging again with incomplete “families”. Please complete the fellowship (including smeagol/gollum)! Thanks for listening! ~Mick

  25. chezzrok says:

Will there ever be a THANOS PF!???
    Please say yes!!

  26. Jerald Kendall says:

Hello. Are there any plans for the R2-D2 and C3PO in Premium Format?

  27. JOKER says:

    THE FELLOWSHIP IS “BROKEN”…

  28. DJ says:

I must agree on the LOTR 12″ line. There may not be enough interest from Sideshow to have the line include every LOTR character, but I think at the VERY least, the rest of the Fellowship should be released at some point. The loyal 12″ collectors deserve that much.

  29. Charlie says:

    1) With the new star trek movie will you be making any 1/4 scale or busts?
    2) Are there Any more 1/4 scale james bond being made?
    3) Any chance on 1/4 scale spiderman villans being made like Rhino ?

    Thanks
    Charlie

  30. Dallas says:

Good to see that the kinks with the Prometheus are being worked out. Hopefully it will be good to go when Snake Eyes ships.

  31. Shad says:

Very sad on the LOTR 12″ Line… the one that I planned on collecting fully. Lackluster sales is also due to figure selection, as the hobbits are my least favorite characters, and not as interesting as others. But, a Gimli figure, Aragorn in armor, Legolas in armor, Theoden, Eomer in armor, Lurtz…. those would have sold extremely well. I hope you revisit this decision, and produce more figures in the line, or at least complete the fellowship. And if not, how about passing on those rights to Hot Toys to take it over and give people some product?!

  32. Mike K. says:

Is there a specific number of 12″ G.I. Joe figure planned for this year or are you basing the number releases on the sales of previous Joe figures?

  33. josh a says:

There is a lot of toys sold out. in Marvel and Monsters/Horror section, such as the freddy vs jason.
Re stock ever? haha I would love to get a lot of those sold out toys now that I finally have an account on this site.

  34. JDB73 says:

Would you ever consider doing a 12″ line of the band KISS? Premium Formats are just huge dust magnets with very little articulation. They’re not fun at all. Also, would you ever consider doing an 80s music artist line? People that shaped the 80s: Madonna, Prince, Billy Idol, Cyndi Lauper, etc.

  35. Mary says:

Will you ever design any Harry Potter 12″ figures?

  36. JS in Rochester says:

It’s no coincidence that they mentioned the line solicitations going downhill from Faramir on, once the final product was seen, as much as the Sam and Frodo took things WAY up a notch, I think too many folks were turned off already by how the final Faramir looked. And that dark brown cloak. Luckily, I have a friend who sews and I am a professional illustrator, so the head has been repainted and he has a green cloak, so now it’s a great figure.

  37. Samuel Campbell says:

Gimli, Merry and Pippin, Should be finished. ORCS would sell like wild fire once the Fellowship of the Ring was complete. You could turn out 1 Orc per month…..Your sales would skyrocket.

  38. GRAHAM CHADWICK says:

I would love to buy more figures from sideshow, but the added cost of carriage and taxes to the UK, often puts the breaks on. would ordering through the EU warehouse make any difference to costs?
sideshow figures are available in England but not all of them.
    Thanks,
    Graham.

  39. ryan1 says:

How about 08 clone wars 12 inch line starting off with asajj ventress?

  40. Ryan says:

Yes, please make a Daniel Craig James Bond…

  41. Xeno says:

    More Aliens… AWESOME!!!
Enough with the 12″ dolls though, lets see some CRAZY PF’s!!!!
I’m sure ALOT of us collectors would rather display a polystone PF of Hicks than a 12″ doll with a mini pulse-rifle!!!

  42. Shae Leonard says:

I, too, find it VERY disappointing that the LOTR 12″ line has been put “on hold”. My house is too small for a collection of LOTR Premium Format figures as well as the dioramas (I have purchased one). I would love to add Arwen, Galadriel, and Saruman to my 12″ collection. Perhaps, if the time comes when you decide to continue with the line, you might consider one of those characters as a means of re-introducing them. In the meantime, I will continue my membership, and keep myself informed via the newsletter.
PS: I wholeheartedly agree with JS in Rochester! My fellowship of 12″ figures is incomplete! Please give consideration to at least finishing the “nine”.

  43. OSX1 says:

Will you be doing any more John Wayne figures or any other movie stars.

  44. vp1940 says:

Maybe the LOTR 12″ line would have been more profitable if they had a better character selection. Instead of getting the 1000th version of the fellowship up front, maybe some villains and armored figures to spice up the brown and green cloth heroes would have been what the doctor ordered. Oh yeah, and quality control at the factories. That paint job on Faramir I’m sure scared most of the orders away.

Pretty sad that freakin’ Buffy had a longer line imo.

  45. Stephen Pennacchio says:

Any plans of doing a 12 inches figures of Commander Cody and General Veers in ATAT combat uniform.

  46. The Ween says:

I find it odd that so many SW items are still in stock and have not sold out, but because Samwise and reg Gandalf haven’t you’re giving up on the line? Oh I see, there’s much more profit in making repainted Stormtroopers. Sorry that I’m bitter, but LotR is what brought me here, and it looks like it may take me back out again. :(

It also seems strange that Hot Toys, a Sideshow business ally, saw fit to produce an Edward Scissorhands 12″ figure, but we won’t get our Sideshow Lord of the Rings group filled out. It seems that LOTR holds a little more overall interest still than Edward Scissorhands.
There must be so much more to it (HT higher price points as a rule, more rabid collectors in Asian markets, cheaper production opportunities there), but I don’t get it overall.

  48. JS in Rochester says:

That 12″ LOTR stuff is the most disappointing thing I’ve heard in a long time. It’s what got me collecting 12″ again and really into Sideshow.
Is it really that much more investment than Star Wars characters and such?
    .
I still hold, based on my own toy industry experience, that only two a year to begin with left marginal collectors a little uninterested and so the sales numbers were not as expected. Fans got bored waiting so long and got their “figure fixes” from the more populated Star Wars offerings.
So many of us personally invested in the line with the expectation that we would at least get the Fellowship completed, even at the new higher prices.
    .
What a serious let-down. Makes me want to lay off collecting anything new now.
    .
(I have to say too that if the photos on the site of the Hobbits didn’t look so plasticky, but more like the amazing figures we all received, sales may have been helped. And maybe more “hype support” for the sparse LOTR offerings would have kept fans and collectors more interested.)
    .
I hope at some point with Hobbit fever building in the next year or two, we might get our Merry, Pippin and Gimli after all.
    .
Since Sideshow is so collector-oriented, I hope their position on this is reconsidered soon, for the sake of the fan base that faithfully supported that line, only to be left hanging with an “incomplete set” in the end.
I think a lot of us would pay a little more each for a limited run of the remaining Fellowship characters to fill out our collections. And Arwen and a villain or two.
    .
This really is a major bummer and makes me think twice now about further collecting of specific lines.
Ending with Gandalf might be a high note, but the overall song is left very much unfinished.

  50. John White says:

  51. Scott says:

Any chance we’ll see Mad Max or Blade Runner lines in the near future?

  52. dokie says:

will you ever make a Haldir of LOTR premium format statue?

  53. J. L. says:

I would love to see a 12″ figure of Charlie Chaplin. Maybe some of the great actors from the 40’s & 50’s, too.

  54. Deck says:

I noticed your webiste released a great looking Blade Runner print not long ago. Do you have this license for 1/6 or Premium Format lines or was that a one shot deal? I’d love some Sideshow Blade Runner figures in the future.

  55. Michael says:

LOTR IS NOT A LOSS! I am sure the “On Hold” will come down as soon as more on The Hobbit starts to come to light. I have not lost hope for them yet! Untill then there are so many other things I can collect and so can YOU! Don’t loose all hope.

  56. Nicholas A. Koulouris says:

I would love to see you guys do Marvel and DC line 12inch figures. I usally like to stick with one company when collecting and you guys are it.

  57. Brad says:

I think there is great potential for more Lotr PFs. I would be sick if you stopped producing these after we have invested so much. Also we need at least one Classic monster entry to the PF line every year.

  58. Matt says:

Vale Gimli, Merry and Pippin! Thanks for the formal update on the future of the 12″ LOTR line. I (and many others, I suspect from the posts) appreciated the craftsmanship and attention to detail of each LOTR figure and they will always hold a special position in my SS collection. You have ample depth in your other licences to keep me a SS disciple(but please don’t forget Bond!)! Happy New Year Sideshow!

  59. K says:

The news about the LOTR 12″ line is very sad. That is what brought me here, and now its done. I can only buy so many repaints of stormtroopers, or Kenobi. It is the only reason I subscribe to the newsletter even. I guess it is time to use my reword points and gift cards and get out.

  60. Franco says:

I attend a new Premium Format Figure Star Wars World:R2-D2,C3PO,Chewbecca,Emperor Palpatine.Thanks.

  61. Gabonais says:

    Happy new year 1st.
Any chance to see one day, Sonny From I-Robot as PF?
or Silver Surfer Comiquette Maquette ?…

    Many tks in advance.

  62. Mario Trejo says:

Are there any plans for Sideshow to continue work with Star Wars Life-Size Busts??
When and which are the options?

  63. Roland Schama says:

I am a fan of the Marvel Comiquettes. I have White Queen (Emma Frost) and Rogue in my office. I have the Black Queen (Jean Grey?) on order (with AFX). These are gorgeous in detail and quality. I love them.

    1) But what the heck is “comiquette”. Where was this term coined? I have found these to be the finest quality of all statues I have seen.

    2) What is polystone versus other types of material i.e. cold cast porcelain or whatever? Is it more durable? Is polystone like cement?

    3) What upcoming Marvel figures are coming? Any chance of a DC license? I have been collecting Women of the DCU mini busts and would love to see some of the DC females in the comiquette line. The newly announced DC Cover Girls line of statues look nice but will not compare to your comiquettes!

4)Also, anyone know where I might be able to still find the Black Cat (and Maybe Mary Jane) comiquette?

  64. Van says:

Are there any plans for a 12 inch Farmer Vincent from Motel Hell?

  65. Van says:

Are there any plans to make a 12 inch Tall Man from Phantasm?

  66. Robb B. says:

The LOTR 12″ line is officially “on hold.”
    .
My heart is now officially broken.
    .
    (sigh)

  67. Rich says:

Do you still have the license to do NEW figures in the James Bond line?
