Your Questions Answered – G.I. JOE – 01/20/10

I love your G.I. Joe line and I wanted to know if we’ll be seeing more of Cobra Commander 1/6 or in Premium Format? And if so, will we be seeing a Helmeted version instead of hooded?

Most definitely, yes. Cobra Commander will next appear in the Diorama series, along with some of his elite. Yes, we will be offering a helmeted version of Cobra Commander in the future, including a new version in 1:6 scale.

I love the female sculpts. Are there any immediate plans for Scarlett, Baroness or Lady Jaye for the G.I. Joe line?

Scarlett, Baroness, and Lady Jaye have all been designed for the 12-inch line, and we’re eager to start them too. Development for these figures isn’t in progress yet – we’re finalizing a few details regarding the base female body first.

Why was the GI Joe Firefly 12-inch figure made so different from the concept artwork we were shown at SDCC? The concept art looked like a great interpretation of the character. A perfect mix of his traditional look and some modern updates. But the actual figure seem completely different. His mask doesn’t even feature the classic camo pattern, and the rest of his clothing is very different from the concept artwork as well. Can we expect any tweaks to this figure between now and production? At the very least a camo pattern to his mask? -AND- I think the upcoming GI Joe Firefly is pretty impressive. But I was wondering why the drastic change from the production art shown at SDCC 2009. Also, PLEASE PLEASE reconsider painting Firefly’s mask camo colors. Keep up the great work, YO JOE! -and- There are many of us wondering if we are going to get a camo head with your current Firefly in the GI Joe 12″ series? If not, will a classic version be issued down the line?

Our development team works hard to find a balance between classic Joe designs and modern practical real-world gear so that the 12-inch figures are immediately recognizable as their source characters but feature as much of the gear that a real-world operative of their type might actually use. We did read the feedback to the Firefly figure reveal and do see that many wish that the facemask could be painted in camo colors. We were hesitant to paint it in camo due to production paint limitations, but we are attempting to turn-out a sample with painted camo to see if the effect looks good enough to warrant including a second portrait in the package. Stay tuned – we’ll have an update for you before Firefly ships.

I’m a life long fan of G.I.Joe toys and toon and haven’t been too pleased with the direction the 12″ line has gone. Has there been any thoughts to release core characters with a design based closer to the “real american hero” look? Some of the characters you made have gotten close but then there’s Firefly that goes way off the mark (in my opinion). Also, how hard would it be to use fabric over the sculpts to give it a more convincing appearance, like in Cobra Commander’s hood for example?

We’ve addressed the Firefly comment in response above, so please seek your answer regarding that figure there. With regard to your question about using fabric over the sculpts, we also prefer to use real fabric when and where we believe that the final production outcome will have the desired appearance. For instance, the Cobra Troopers feature the fabric facemask in addition to having the sculpted facemask underneath. For characters like hooded Cobra Commander, Firefly, and Beachhead, it seemed likely that their likenesses would be less effective with real fabric masks, because the fabric couldn’t be made to adhere closely enough to the faces to give enough of the anatomy or expression. In those instances, we felt that fully sculpted portraits provided a much more aesthetically desirable effect.

Thank you all for submitting such intriguing questions. Keep watching our Production Blog and listening to our Podcasts as we continue to answer more Ask Sideshow questions in the future!

Please Note: If you would like to submit a question using the form, please remember that Ask Sideshow should NOT be used as a way to solicit for a job, contact Customer Service, ask about a shipping date, or register a complaint. Most of those questions, comments, and solicitations can be most efficiently sent to us by filling out our online Customer Service Request Form.

Also, a fair warning: Questions that ask, “Will you be doing/Why don’t you do [insert license or character name]?” will probably never be answered. We’re happy to drop hints when we can, but we cannot answer any direct questions about what we’re planning in the future for a variety of reasons, which include (but are not limited to) licensing, production, artistic contracts, and ever-changing schedules and projected release dates. A Snowjob figure would be awesome any plans on making one of my favorite joe characters?

  2. Jason says:

These whiners are outrageous you guys are doing a fantastic job with the gijoe line keep up the good work. Any chance of seeing a shipwreck figure?

  3. Bagger says:

if you are going to do a scarlett 12″ figure, please do the version from G.I.Joe Resolute, i think she looks the best this way, by the way keep up the good work, love all the joes so far, as far as firefly’s mask, doesn’t matter to me, i’ll paint it camo if it’s black

  4. markit0dude says:

I can hardly wait for more joes to go with the Cobra figs that have already come out. They have all been great!

  5. TheCrystalShip says:

Looking forward to the rest of the Joes to be released in 2010. The last half of the year should be very exciting.

  6. widgit says:

The key factor in any interpretation of a franchise character is to honor at least one major signature aspect of the original profile, even if you “update” or “reimagine” the concept. So far, I can point to at least 3 signature elements in each of the Joe and Cobra characters that Sideshow has released so far, where this philosophy is executed in each rendition. It’s great and so far I love it. The only one I don’t see that with, however, is Firefly.

With Firefly we have a deviation from his outfit AND his gear from the original look, and a camo pattern that doesn’t resemble the original at all. There is very little in the figure aside from “a mask” and “generic grey camo” to distinguish him as the character Firefly.

There are plenty of other Cobra characters and JOES who wore grey camo over the years, and with the new movie’s costume production, it’s apparently all the rage. But realism be damned, we’re talking about a sabotuer who works for a terrorist group that accessorizes all their toys and accomplices with a big bright snake sigil.

Updating all the hardware is great because it shows that Sideshow cares about promoting a timeless image to each character. But at least give us Firefly’s camouflage mask, so we have something of his original appearance to recognize.

Thanks, Sideshow for listening to our comments. We know you guys are the only ones who can give us the best versions of the JOE figures, and it’s reassuring to know you’ll at least reply to our concerns.

  7. Tom P. says:

Yes, there has been a lot of whining over the details of various product lines and some of that “nit-picking” has been excessive and just down right silly!….but, I disagree on the point that Sideshow will distance themselves from their collectors by placating them whenever they have a disagreement about the accuracy of a sculpt, pose, costume, etc.. I feel pretty sure Sideshow is smarter than that – they have altered their business plan to not only listen to their customers, but to encourage feedback. I can say from first hand experience that there is always a good reason for anything a company does for it’s customers….and, when it’s done right, it creates a win-win situation for everyone – Sideshow makes money by winning over their loyal customers, the collector wins by getting what they want. So far, Sideshow has done an outstanding job of winning over this fellow as a customer. I could probably put a child through college or take the vacation of a lifetime to some exotic place with what I’ve spent to date! :-)

  8. eric says:

Firefly looks perfect. Don’t change it.

  9. Russ says:

I love the real world take on the Joe line. I was in the army and love your cobra trooper and sniper. Outstanding work people!

  10. doesnt matter says:

dont listen to all the whiners, they are just squeaky wheels trying to get oil. your product is great, and i love your interpretations of these great characters. dont change a thing.

  11. Anibal says:

I think the criticism over the Firefly mask has been excessive. Did anyone criticize Hasbro when they made their Firefly figure back in the 80s? I DO remember many people who criticized Hasbro for making the Joe line as 3.75″ figures instead of their original 12″. Had Hasbro listened to all the outcry, you guys wouldn’t even know the so-called vintage look of many of these figures. I like the fact that Sideshow is doing their own interpretation of these figures while remaining fairly loyal to the Joe line from the 80s. Making exact 12″ versions of the 80s line is pointless in my opinion. I love the fact that these figures have a sense of realism attached to them. Alternate universes be damned. I never thought that what made Firefly such a cool figure was a camoflaged mask. A camoflaged mask?!? I always thought he was cool because he was in grey camoflage, looking like a ninja with explosives. I shudder at the thought of the criticism Sideshow will get when they release their interpretation of Zartan. I love the new look of Firefly and I personally wouldn’t change a thing. I think a camo mask with a camo hood seems excessive on the camoflage feature. I guess not everyone gets it.

  12. Tazmaxh says:

I agree with you 100% Steve. I like Firefly the way he is. I don’t buy Sideshow products looking for exact replicas, but the best interpretation of them. The black mask just makes more sense.

  13. Rich says:

1/6 scale Beachead!!!! When can we expect a prototype picture?

  14. Steve says:

Sideshow…you could be opening a can of worms if you just give in to unreasonable criticisms about the figures you make. You guys have the absolute right to interpret these figures any way you want. And Firefly is a freakin’ awesome figure even WITH the areas that step away from the original design. I appreciate your willingness to hear and consider collectors’ feedback, but I can’t help but wonder if doing it too much will only serve to intensify the criticism, and then that lead to a distancing of Sideshow from the collectors. I posted this concern over at Sideshowcollectors.com as well. I further mentioned on that forum that it seems to me that there is a considerably decreased presence from Sideshow’s people there and I am wondering if it has anything to do with, what seems to me to be, a steady increase in the amount of trivial complaints like “I want a camouflaged balaclava” or “The sculpt isn’t 100% perfect”.

I know you guys will do what is best for you all…in the end, I would just hate to see all the whining damage the willingness of Sideshow to interact with the fans as they have been so good at historically.

  15. Joe says:

I have to agree, the look of Firefly is disappointing. It is a bit of a mess with the long patches of dark material on the uniform and the camo is not very striking. I understand the “real world” angle you are taking, but let’s keep in mind that these are fictional characters from a alternate universe and therefore should maintain that charm. So I think you have lost sight of the fact that the collectors want more fully realized versions of the vintage characters and not a reinvention. Duke is a great example of that, and you have hit the mark. Even Cobra Commander, though different, still maintains the integrity and the spirit of the original (plus, we are used to seeing so many versions over the years). Firefly just isn’t striking and strays too far.

  16. Tom P. says:

This is why Sideshow is so awesome! What other company would listen to the requests of their customers AFTER a collectible has already come into the prototype stage?

  17. Jason the Great says:

Let’s get some comiquette or PF statues. First in line has to be Snake Eyes (comiquette & a close 2nd Baroness in PF).

  18. Sir Tristram says:

Yes, please CHANGE Firefly’s head and make it with CAMO! Come on!
….and real world? Come on…I understand the sentiment, but how many military people are running around looking like most of the Cobra army? Any White Ninja leaping from rooftops lately? I can’t wait to see what a ‘real world’ take is on Destro. Good god.

  19. Flosi says:

    Camo Firefly mask>>>>>>>>>>Grey Mask

    Make it happen SSC!

  20. Incurable Collector says:

one more plea to add a camo portrait to Firefly Sideshow. Pretty please!!!!!!

  21. FIREFLY says:

Please sell me with a camo mask….please

  22. Kibishii says:

PLEASE include a camo portrait with Firefly so that I don’t have to pay someone else to customize it for me. Thank you. =)
