"For over a thousand generations the Jedi Knights were the guardians of peace and justice in the Old Republic."
For centuries, the Jedi were revered as the keepers of peace and justice in the galaxy. Theirs was the way of wisdom and patience, backed by swift and decisive action. As wielders of the mystical Force and their glowing, signature lightsabers, their powers inspired awe in most of the galaxy's citizens and their calm, considered demeanor made them ideal brokers of peace in times of conflict or dispute.
Jedi came in all shapes and sizes, being of diverse race and talent. The ability to sense and channel the Force was a gift that crossed all boundaries of social status and species. From the diminutive, but unquestionable authority of the sagely Master Yoda, to the imposing grandeur of great warriors like Mace Windu, the Jedi were the embodiment of serene power. Some, like the gallant Cerean Knight Ki-Adi-Mundi or the enigmatic Kel-dor Master Plo Koon, were active soldiers and leaders, quick in mind and blade, while others chose more philosophical devotions, meditating on the nature of the Force to better understand its ways. The gentle Obi-Wan Kenobi was a model Jedi, equal part thinker and warrior, with the calming manner of a natural negotiator. His pupil, Anakin Skywalker, was a dashing hero, with charm and combat finesse that few could match. Though contrasted in style, these two were perfectly matched as partners and friends.
Yet, for all their power and diversity, the Jedi were few. By the time of the Clone Wars the Jedi Order numbered only in the thousands, including Masters and aspiring Padawans. In this time of doubt and confusion, the Jedi were beset with foes, both outside the Galactic Republic, in the form of the Separatist forces they fought, and also from elements within the very heart of the government, who sought to undermine their rule and even destroy them. As the war drew on, the wise among the Jedi Council, the Order's governing body, began to sense the undercurrent of evil that had pervaded the establishment they served.
In the fire of the great Jedi Purge that heralded the rise of the Empire, all but a few were slain. An act of treachery and murder, the Purge was brought about by Darth Sidious and enacted by his servants, including, and foremost among them, the fallen Anakin Skywalker, who went on, as Darth Vader, to hunt down and destroy those Jedi who survived the slaughter.
Yet even this catastrophe failed to eradicate the Jedi completely, and, within a generation, they had returned to once again protect and nurture the galaxy with their wisdom and guidance. Founded by Jedi Master Luke Skywalker, the son of Anakin, the New Jedi Order resurrected the organization of guardians dedicated to the ideals of peace, and began to recover the lost knowledge of the old order. Under his wise leadership, they would protect and serve on in the tradition of their forbearers.
