Presenting Sideshow Collectibles Cabinet of Curiosities

Tuesday, October 23, 2012

Earlier this year, Sideshow Collectibles Artist David Igo went to Monsterpalooza, a convention in Burbank dedicated to the Art of Monsters, and provided us with this cool recap.

Monsterpalooza is all about the artistry of the unusual, the supernaturally life-like, and downright horrific. With many talented horror and sci-fi fans on the team, it was a no-brainer for Sideshow to get on board this time around. We put our heads together and worked hard to assemble a modest booth for the returning show: Son of Monsterpalooza!

The Sideshow Collectibles “Cabinet of Curiosities” will feature both original collectibles from The Dead, available through Sideshow, and one-of-a-kind art from several of our artists’ personal portfolios.

Meet the crew, and take a sneak peek at what they’re cooking up:

Tom Gilliland – Creative Director

“Think big, work small….”

Venomsaurus Rex Maquette – (Inarguably) My Idea

David Igo is an Art Director at Sideshow Collectibles, where he’s resided for the past 3 years and it’s his duty to help make things as awesome as possible. During his “free time” he runs an art-posse called SatelliteSoda. He also love anything and everything with tentacles, sharp rows of teeth and Venom. Lastly, he doesn’t look like Edward from Twilight, Edward from Twilight looks like David Igo.

Walter O’Neal – Concept Artist

“For Monsterpalooza I just wanted to take the opportunity to do a sculptural exploration of a concept I’ve been stewing around for a while. Random ideas occur to you while you’re knee deep in other projects, and I finally have a reason to kick one of those back up and try to bring it to life. Should be interesting to say the least…”

In that time, he’s sculpted for Toy Biz, Disney, Jakks Pacific and Diamond Select Toys, to name a few. He also loves, collects, and customizes action figures! To that end, he operates Go Native Toys, where he sells a 3 3/4 inch tall action figure body buck, called Alpha Blanx. It is intended as an articulated starting point for action figure customizers and artists to sculpt over. Some of Michael’s work can be seen at his portfolio here.

Nathan Mansfield – Sculptor

Avatar Neytiri Statue – Sculptor
Splice Dren Statue – Sculptor
G.I. Joe Sixth Scale Figures – Sculptor

Nathan Mansfield, when not sculpting professionally for Sideshow Collectibles or Optic Nerve Studios, spends most of his time by either lurking in dark places or hassling any billy goats that chance to go clip clopping over his bridge. He enjoys formal lawn parties, fancy hats, and being left alone.

Anthony Mestas – Key Artist

“Youth is wasted on the young”

Sideshow Collectibles Credits:

The Transformation of Jack the Ripper Premium Format Figure – Paint
Predator Legendary Scale Bust – Paint
Species Maquette- Paint

At a very young age Anthony loved everything monster and dinosaur.  But unlike most he never outgrew that passion.  It started with building Aurora model kits with his grandfather. Moving to metal gaming miniatures as a teen, resin Garage Kits as an adult, and graduating to life-sized dinosaur replicas for museums. His years of experience in model building and painting set the stage for what would become a career.  A ten year stint with Amazing Figure Modeler magazine, an invitation to compete in Japan on a popular TV show (TV Champion). Anthony has been with Sideshow Collectibles for the past nine years, he currently runs the Paint Department.

Tim Hanson – Senior Costume Designer

“Alright you primitive screwheads, listen up!”

Snakes Eyes G.I. Joe Sixth Scale Figure – Costume Design
The Joker Premium Format Figure - Costume Design
Catwoman Legendary Scale Figure - Costume Design

Tim is a Senior Costume Designer for Sideshow Collectibles in Thousand Oaks, CA. For the last 6 years, he has been greatly enjoying costume fabrication for Sideshow’s diverse line of sixth, quarter, and half scale creations. Being a child of the rad 80s, his fascination for comic book, fantasy, sci-fi and horror characters began at a very early age, thanks to his father and many older brothers. Having no formal background or training in costuming, he is predominantly self taught and proof that sheer determination and dedication to your craft will take you places you only dreamed of being. In addition to costuming, Tim enjoys drawing and sculpting and is constantly inspired by the immense talents of the artists he works with everyday.

Jesse Lincoln – Project Manager

“I was a nerd when nerd wasn’t fashionable.”

Sideshow Collectibles Credits:

Boba Fett Sixth Scale Figure – Development
Star Wars Dewback Sixth Scale Figure – Development
Crimson Guard G.I. Joe Sixth Scale Figure – Development

Jesse has always collected action figures. He credits both his collecting bug and career choices to the original Star Wars trilogy, which fed his hunger as a kid. He got his professional start in the FX industry back in ’95 at Rick Baker’s “Cinovision Studios.” From there he went on to work for several companies in the collectibles industry. This will be his 8th year working at Sideshow Collectibles.

The show will kick off this Friday, October 26th at the Marriott Burbank Convention Center. If you’re local to southern California, be sure to stop by and say hello! Here are the details:
