Meet this week’s Featured Collector

Simmon M.

Location: Long Island, NY

Started Collecting: In 1977 my father took me to see Star Wars at RKO Keith’s theater in Flushing, NY. That experience served as my gateway into the worlds of comic books, horror and science fiction movies…

Throughout the years I’ve collected mostly comics. It wasn’t until the turn of the century when I first discovered that Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber was really a Graflex flash unit spruced up with a few greeblies that I was introduced to the world of movie prop-making. The hobby took flight from there and it’s been a great recreational outlet that is tied to the wonderful memory of my dad taking me out to see Star Wars for the very first time.

My collection is mostly focused on life sized movie replicas, specifically some of the more popular movie franchises from the 1980s (i.e. Star Wars, Predator, Halloween, Aliens, assorted horror films etc.). I am fascinated by strong creature driven designs. Most of the subjects in my collection bring me back to a fantastic time in cinematic history where we saw a lot of wonderfully designed monsters and aliens brought to life via practical effects.
Some of the pieces that I do not think I could ever part with include a 1935 version of Frankenstein's Monster sculpted by Howard Senft and painted by Jeff Camp as a tribute to Basil Gogos, and a life-size bust of Elsa Lancaster as the Monster's bride which was sculpted, haired and finished by Mike Hill. And, of course, my life-size figures of Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine!
When I add Sideshow's upcoming life sized Han Solo in Carbonite and Sideshow's life sized Endoskeleton to my collection I think I can die a happy man! :)
