Designing the Deadly Deathstroke- A Behind the Scenes Look
“No more work for hire. From today, I’ll decide who needs to die.”
Sideshow recently received a visit from the incredible Marv Wolfman, and we were honored to share our vision of his striking mercenary through the Deathstroke Premium Format Figure.
Known as Slade Wilson, Deathstroke is a skilled mercenary and assassin co-created for DC Comics by writer Wolfman and artist George Pérez. He is a deadly archnemesis of the Teen Titans, and has his own moral code. Deathstroke wears a striking orange and blue uniform equipped with many weapons which he utilizes with incredible precision. The two-toned mask hides Deathstroke’s missing eye, but with his accuracy and killer aim, you would never know the difference.
Project Manager Mike Tolentino said: “During Marv Wolfman’s visit, he gave us some great backstory on the character. Deathstroke wasn’t initially pitched as a villain, but someone with skills who would just go where the money is. He would do the jobs he was paid to do, not out of evil but out of necessity. He’s a fascinating character and we wanted to capture that complex history with our statue.”
The visit included Wolfman taking a closer look at the Premium Format Figure as well as the extensive concept art and planning that went into designing the pose and costume. It was also an awesome chance for the Sideshow Design and Development team to chat with the mind behind Deathstroke and an immense legacy of Teen Titans comic work, reminding us why we love the character.
Project Manager Kevin Ellis said: “There were certainly some challenges with this statue but the whole team came together to really deliver Deathstroke’s iconic look. We tried to stay as true to the character’s design as possible, and we are proud to have achieved the striking look of this piece.”
Mike Tolentino added: “I’ve always been a fan of the character, and this statue has a really great attitude to it. His pose is one of stalking, so you know he’s in action going after someone, and you can’t help but watch in anticipation.”
