Here’s What We Hope to See in a Standalone Obi-Wan Film
According to an article by The Hollywood Reporter, filmmaker Stephen Daldry is in talks to direct a standalone Star Wars film about Obi-Wan Kenobi. There are no actors or script attached to the project, which has yet to be definitively confirmed, but fans are excited to take a look at this beloved, but still somewhat mysterious, character who played such a large role in the first two trilogies of the Skywalker Saga.
Sideshow developed its own interpretation of Obi-Wan Kenobi as a part of our Mythos line, imagining what the nomad Jedi became in his years after Revenge of the Sith but before A New Hope. At San Diego Comic Con 2017 we even revealed the Obi-Wan Kenobi Mythos Sixth Scale Figure, and the response to this piece proved that fans are curious to know more about Obi-Wan and his years in Tatooine, before becoming Old Ben Kenobi.
Here are a few things we think might be great to see Obi-Wan Kenobi standalone Star Wars film.
Potential Timeline – 5 to 10 years after Revenge of the Sith
Actor Ewan McGregor has expressed strong interest in reprising his role as Obi-Wan since his last appearance as the Jedi master over 12 years ago. Sir Alec Guinness was in his sixties as Obi-Wan in A New Hope, making Ewan, now 45, the proper age range for a story that takes place years before the events of Episode 4.
Obi-Wan’s story would help fill in the some of the 20 year gap between Episodes 3 and 4. Perhaps we could even see a younger version of Luke Skywalker while Ben spends his time on Tatooine.
Possibly a much younger Obi-Wan
The studios have yet to confirm whether an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie will feature an older or a younger version of the Jedi master, but if they do choose feature a younger Obi-Wan we may see flashbacks to his youth much like the scenes in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story with Jyn Erso.
This was essentially the first Star Wars film to feature such flashbacks, and may be a new theme for adding history and lore to the standalone films.
Location – Tatooine
Tatooine may sound like an obvious choice for setting if they choose to do an older Obi-Wan movie, pre-A New Hope. After the purge of the Jedi and delivering Luke to his aunt and uncle, Obi-Wan spends the rest of his life living on Tatooine in exile maintaining a watchful eye over the son of his dearest friend and former apprentice.
While he watches the Skywalker farm, we could see a hermit Ben Kenobi scouring through the landscape of Tatooine and battling the locals. This might be the only Star Wars film that could entirely center on a single, familiar planet.
A younger, proto-version of the Galactic Empire
This may depend on the timeline of the film, but if it does take place around 5 to 10 years after the Revenge of the Sith, we could see a younger version of the Galactic Empire that is in the middle of transitioning from Old Republic forces to a new Imperial Army.
Perhaps we may see some of the last of the Clone Trooper regiments before the Empire moved to fully implementing recruited Stormtroopers from around the galaxy. This could include older versions of clones as Stormtroopers commanding new recruits, or previously unseen versions of Imperial armor and uniforms.
If an Obi-Wan film does focus on his years on Tatooine, we may see some interesting encounters with some new and even familiar characters. The sand people may threaten the Skywalker farm and Obi-Wan will have to step in to save the day. Perhaps we will see an encounter with Jabba the Hutt, or the scum and villainy of Mos Eisley’s Cantina.
Let’s not forget the Galactic Empire, which could look different as we speculated above. There are so many great opportunities for epic battles between the denizens of the galaxy and the former Jedi master. There is even potential to see a bounty hunter or even a Rancor!
There are so many stories left to tell in the Star Wars galaxy, so we can’t wait to see what unfolds next! What would you want to see in an Obi-Wan Kenobi standalone film? Any other characters you think deserve their own movie?
